Jane's Perspective
"Yes, Lady Rochford?""Majesty," she said with a sweet smile and a gracious bow. "Lady Leel has written to me, expressing her hope Your Majesty might be able to offer a position in your household to one of her two daughters. So, I told her I'd discuss it with you."
"Have you further warned Lady Leel that life at court is full of pride, envy, scorn and derision?" I teased, earning a small laugh. "Well, if you have, then send them to me, and I'll choose one of them."
"Yes, Madam."
"Good, but remember they must bring two sets of clothes. One made of Saturn, and another made of Damascus."
"Hmm, Madam."
As Lady Rochford walked away, I sighed. Approaching the final weeks of my pregnancy, I couldn't help but wonder if my gowns had always been this tight, or if it was just my growing bump. "Lady Missledon, could you please unlace my gown? It appears to be getting tighter by the hour."
"Yes, Madam." She smiled as she began to undo the laces. Meanwhile, I was plundering in my thoughts. What if I don't do it? What if I don't give Henry a son? He'd either divorce me, like Mary's Mother, Catherine or I'd lose my head, like the Witch, Anne Boleyn.
"Lady Missledon?"
"Yes, Madam?"
Heaving a sigh, I bent down to her ear. "If anything should ever happen to me or the baby, please be of comfort for His Majesty," I whispered, not wanting the others to hear.
"I will, Mad-MADAM!!!"
The other Ladies swarmed around us as Ursula kept me from banging into the table beside me.
"Don't be alarmed, Ladies!" I gently stated, holding onto Ursula for dear life. "But I'm afraid my time has come."
"Right now, Madam? But it's not for another while."
"I know, but I guess this one is ready to bless their future subjects with their graceful appearance." Sh*t! Do you need to come right now? "Mmph! Lady Rochford! Please go grab the midwife, and Lady Missledon, help me to my bed."
"Yes, Madam!"
