Lisa’s voice broke through the heavy silence,

"It’s getting late. You should go inside."

She gave Kaleb a small, gentle smile, but her eyes didn’t quite reach mine. I couldn’t read her expression—it was a mix of emotions that I couldn’t decipher.

Kurt stepped forward to help as I shifted Kaleb in my arms. I watched Lisa as she got back into her car, her face still unreadable. As she drove away, I felt a tightness in my chest, like I was holding my breath.

During dinner with my parents, I could hardly focus. My mind kept drifting back to Lisa—how she looked when I told her about Kaleb, how she didn’t say much after that. What was she thinking? Was she upset? Confused? I couldn’t tell, and it was driving me crazy.

After dinner, I put Kaleb to bed, brushing a kiss on his forehead as he slept peacefully. But my mind was far from ease. It was now midnight, and I was still wide awake, staring at the ceiling, replaying the day over and over in my head.

Lisa didn’t ask me any questions, didn’t press for details. She just left. And now, I’m terrified. What if this is too much for her? What if she’s rethinking everything and decides to run away again?

The thought gnawed at me, making it impossible to relax.

I wanted to believe that she wouldn’t leave me, that she’d understand and accept this part of my life. But the fear of losing her again was overwhelming, and I found myself overthinking every possible scenario.

My heart ached with the uncertainty, and all I could do was lie there, hoping that when tomorrow came, she’ll still be there.

I couldn’t take it anymore. The silence, the uncertainty—it was eating me up inside. I reached for my phone and dialled Lisa’s number, my heart pounding with each ring. But she didn’t answer. A wave of panic washed over me, and I called her again, praying she would pick up this time.

Finally, I heard her voice on the other end.

"Jen."

"Did you get home safely?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady, though I could hear the tension in my own words.

There was a slight pause before she replied,

"Yeah, I just got home." But something didn’t add up. It had been four hours since she left.

"Just got home? It’s been hours since you left. What happened?"

She hesitated before answering, "I went nearby, just to freshen up and think."

I felt a lump forming in my throat, unsure if I should push further.

"Why are you still awake?" she asked, her tone soft but concerned.
