Jennie's POV:
The ride home with Lisa was quiet, almost too quiet. The hum of the car’s engine and the soft sound of the city passing by were the only things breaking the silence. I was tired, both from the long day and the weight of everything that’s been on my mind. I could feel my eyelids growing heavy as we drove, the familiar pull of sleep taking over. Before I knew it, I drifted off, lulled by the smooth motion of the car.
"Jennie, we’re here," Lisa’s voice gently woke me. I blinked, realizing we had arrived at the pin location I had given her. I glanced around, seeing the familiar surroundings of my neighbourhood.
"So, this is where you live now," Lisa said, her tone neutral, though I could sense her trying to piece together something about this part of my life.
I just nodded, not really trusting my voice at that moment. I was still groggy, still caught in the haze of sleep, and frankly, I didn’t know what to say. There was a strange tension in the air, something unspoken but palpable.
For a moment, there was silence. I was about to thank her for the ride and step out of the car when Lisa spoke again. Her voice was hesitant, almost unsure, which was unusual for her.
I could sense that she had something on her mind. My heart started to race, wondering if this was the moment she would bring up the past.
"Jennie, can we talk, please?" she asked, her eyes searching mine in the dim light of the car.
I turned to face her fully, taking a deep breath.
"What do you want to talk about, Lisa?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
There was a part of me that didn’t want to have this conversation, that just wanted to go inside, close the door, and avoid whatever it was she was about to bring up. But I knew Lisa, and I knew that when she asked for something like this, it was important.
Lisa looked down at the steering wheel, her fingers gripping it tightly for a moment before she let go and turned to face me.
As Lisa followed me inside, the air between us felt thick with unspoken words. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but I knew this conversation had the potential to bring up everything I had tried so hard to bury.
We sat down in the living room, the silence stretching as I turned to her.
"What do you want to talk about, Lisa?" I asked again, my voice steady, though my heart was anything but."Jennie… I’ve been thinking a lot since we ran into each other again. There are things I’ve wanted to say to you, things I never got the chance to explain…"
Her voice trailed off, and I could see the conflict in her eyes. She was struggling to find the right words, something I hadn’t seen in her before.
I felt a lump forming in my throat, memories of our past flooding back.
"Lisa, if this is about the past—"
"It is," she cut me off gently, her voice firm but soft.
"But it’s also about now. Seeing you again… it’s brought up so much that I thought I had moved past. I know we’ve both changed, and I don’t want to dig up old wounds, but I can’t just pretend like everything’s fine when it’s not."
I swallowed hard, my mind racing. I wasn’t sure if I was ready for this, for whatever she was about to say.
"Lisa,I don’t know if revisiting the past is a good idea."
"I know, Jennie," she said, her voice thick with emotion.
"I’m not asking to go back or change anything, if you don't feel the same,I just… I need you to know that I’m sorry. For everything. For leaving the way I did, for not being there when you needed me. I thought I was doing the right thing, but… I see now that I was wrong."
