Y/N arrived at the office the next morning, her mind still swirling with the remnants of yesterday's intense operation. The success of the mission had been a relief, but it came with a heavy burden. She couldn't shake the unsettling realisation that her life was now entangled with the murky, dangerous world Giyuu operated in. The protective measures he was implementing around her only served as a constant reminder of how deeply she was in over her head.
As she made her way to her desk, she noticed the usually lively office seemed subdued. The air was thick with tension, a stark contrast to the camaraderie and relief that had filled the operations centre the day before. The employees moved with a sense of unease, their eyes darting nervously around the room. Something was wrong.
Haruto, her ever-friendly and charismatic mentor, was nowhere to be seen. It wasn't like him to miss the early hours, especially after such a significant event. Y/N's worry deepened, a gnawing sense of anxiety settling in the pit of her stomach. She tried to push it aside, telling herself that he was probably caught up in a meeting or dealing with the aftermath of the operation.
But when Haruto finally appeared later in the morning, something was different about him. His usual bright smile was strained, his movements jittery and hurried. He looked like he hadn't slept, dark circles shadowing his eyes, and his normally impeccable suit was slightly dishevelled. Y/N watched him warily as he approached her desk, her concern growing with every step he took.
"Morning, Y/N," Haruto greeted her with a forced smile. His voice lacked the usual warmth, replaced by an undercurrent of nervous energy. "How are you holding up after yesterday?"
Y/N studied his face, searching for any clue as to what was bothering him. "I'm fine," she replied slowly, choosing her words carefully. "But you don't seem like yourself, Haruto. Is everything okay?"
He waved off her concern with a dismissive gesture. "Just a lot on my plate, you know how it is. Yesterday's operation took a toll on everyone. But don't worry, I'm fine."
His reassurance did little to ease her worry. There was something off about him, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. His usual calm and collected demeanour was replaced by a jitteriness that set off alarm bells in her mind. But she didn't want to press him too hard, not yet.
"I understand," Y/N said, trying to sound as supportive as possible. "It was a tough day for all of us. Just... if there's anything you need to talk about, I'm here."
Haruto gave her a brief nod, his eyes darting around the room as if he were looking for someone. "Thanks, Y/N. I appreciate it."
With that, he excused himself and disappeared into his office, leaving Y/N with a sinking feeling in her chest. Something was wrong, she could feel it. But what? She couldn't shake the suspicion that whatever it was, it had something to do with the operation and the increasing security measures Giyuu had been implementing.
Throughout the day, Y/N noticed more signs of Haruto's unusual behaviour. He seemed distracted, his focus wavering during meetings and conversations. He was more on edge than she had ever seen him, snapping at colleagues for minor mistakes and retreating into his office for long stretches of time. It was as if he was constantly on the lookout, expecting something—or someone—to come after him.
Her concerns only deepened when she overheard snippets of conversations between Giyuu and other high-ranking officials. Words like "increased security," "potential breach," and "keeping a close eye" floated through the air, sending a shiver down her spine. Whatever was going on, it was serious, and she was starting to feel more and more like a pawn in a game she didn't fully understand.
That evening, after most of the staff had left for the day, Y/N decided to confront Haruto. She couldn't stand the tension any longer, the sense of impending doom that hung over the office like a dark cloud. She needed answers, or at the very least, some reassurance that everything would be okay.
