The air in the conference room was thick with tension, the kind that made Y/N's heart race in her chest. Giyuu sat at the head of the table, his sharp gaze sweeping over the assembled team, his demeanour as icy and unreadable as ever. Haruto sat at her side, his arm brushing hers just enough to remind her that he was there, a subtle show of solidarity.
She wasn't sure how to feel about that anymore.
The room was dimly lit, the atmosphere somber as Giyuu detailed the latest intelligence. The rival organisation—the one that had kidnapped her—was planning another strike, but this time the stakes were higher. Much higher.
"Intel suggests an attack is imminent," Giyuu said, his voice cool and authoritative. "We don't know the exact target yet, but it's clear they're coming for us. They've been tracking our shipments, our movements, and now they've gotten bolder."
Y/N tried to focus on the details, but her mind kept wandering to the space between Giyuu and Haruto—an invisible tension that only she seemed to notice. Every time Haruto shifted beside her, she could feel the weight of his presence. And every time she looked at Giyuu, she was reminded of the undeniable pull he had on her, no matter how hard she tried to deny it.
Her feelings were a mess, tangled in a web of confusion, attraction, and guilt. She had agreed to go out with Haruto, to give their relationship a real chance. But every glance at Giyuu, every interaction with him, only seemed to amplify the conflict inside her.
"Y/N," Giyuu's voice pulled her back into the present. She blinked, realizing that he was speaking directly to her now. His dark eyes held hers, unwavering. "You'll be working with me and Haruto on this. We need a coordinated effort if we're going to counter their attack."
Her heart sank. She had been hoping to avoid exactly this—to keep some distance between herself and Giyuu, to give her fledgling relationship with Haruto a chance to flourish. But fate, it seemed, had other plans.
"Understood," she said, forcing her voice to remain steady. She couldn't afford to let her emotions show, not here, not now.
Haruto shifted in his seat beside her, and she glanced at him. His expression was calm, but she noticed a flicker of something in his eyes when Giyuu spoke to her. Possessiveness, maybe? Or was she just imagining it? Lately, it was getting harder to tell.
As the briefing continued, Y/N couldn't help but notice the subtle tension between the two men. Haruto's casual charm seemed to falter in Giyuu's presence, and Giyuu, while as stoic as ever, carried an intensity in his gaze whenever his eyes lingered on her for just a beat too long.
"Haruto," Giyuu said, his tone all business, "you'll handle the coordination with our external contacts. Make sure our supply chains are secure."
Haruto nodded, his usual smile absent. "Got it."
The meeting dragged on, but Y/N barely registered the details. Her mind kept circling back to the unspoken tension between the three of them. She had never been in a situation like this—torn between two men who were both integral parts of her life, and both in ways she wasn't entirely comfortable acknowledging.
After what felt like hours, the meeting finally came to a close. Giyuu dismissed the team, but his gaze lingered on her as the others began to file out. She could feel the weight of it, burning into her back, as she gathered her things.
"We need to discuss your role in this operation further," Giyuu said, his tone low but firm. He hadn't asked her to stay, but the underlying command in his voice was clear.
Y/N hesitated, glancing at Haruto, who had already risen from his seat. He gave her a brief smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "I'll catch up with you later," he said, his voice lighter than the atmosphere warranted. But she could feel it—the subtle shift in him. He was starting to see it, too. The invisible line between her and Giyuu.
"I'll see you later," Y/N replied, offering him a small smile in return. Haruto gave her a lingering glance before walking out of the room, leaving her alone with Giyuu.
As the door clicked shut, the silence between them thickened. Giyuu leaned back in his chair, watching her with an intensity that made her stomach knot. His eyes were as dark as ever, betraying nothing of his thoughts, but she could feel the tension in the air. It was as if they were both waiting for the other to make the first move, to break the stalemate that had been brewing between them for weeks.
"You're distracted," Giyuu said finally, his voice cutting through the silence. It wasn't a question, but a statement. He always saw through her.
Y/N swallowed, feeling her throat tighten. "I'm fine. I'm just trying to process everything."
His gaze sharpened. "You've been different lately."
She knew what he was talking about. She had been pulling away from him, trying to keep her distance, to build a wall between them so she could figure out what she really wanted. But being in the same room with him now, she realized just how futile that effort had been. Every time she was near him, the walls crumbled.
"I'm doing my job," she said, her voice quieter than she intended. "That's all that matters."
Giyuu's eyes darkened. "Your job is important, but I'm not blind, Y/N."
Her heart skipped a beat at the way he said her name, the way it rolled off his tongue with a mixture of authority and something else she couldn't quite place. "What do you mean?"
"You've been distant," he said, his voice dropping a notch. "Since you started going out with Haruto."
Y/N's pulse quickened. She hadn't expected him to confront her about it so directly. "That's none of your business," she said, trying to sound firm, but the tremor in her voice gave her away.
Giyuu's gaze didn't waver. "It is when it affects your work."
Y/N opened her mouth to protest, but she couldn't find the words. He wasn't entirely wrong. Her feelings were all over the place, and it *was* affecting her job. She had been trying so hard to focus on Haruto, to give him the attention he deserved, but every time she was around Giyuu, her emotions betrayed her.
"I don't know what you expect me to say," she said finally, her voice soft but strained. "I'm trying. I'm trying to figure everything out."
Giyuu leaned forward slightly, his gaze never leaving hers. "You don't have to force yourself to feel something you don't."
Her breath caught in her throat. His words hit her like a punch to the gut because they echoed exactly what she had been struggling with. She didn't want to force herself to love Haruto, but wasn't that exactly what she had been doing?
Before she could respond, the door opened, and Haruto stepped back inside, his easygoing smile in place. "Sorry to interrupt," he said, though there was an edge to his tone that hadn't been there before. "Just wanted to let you both know we've got the intel update."
Y/N quickly stood, grateful for the interruption. She couldn't deal with any more intensity from Giyuu right now. Not with Haruto standing right there.
"I'll head back to my desk," she said, brushing past both men, feeling their eyes on her as she hurried out of the room.
As she walked down the hallway, her heart pounded in her chest, and she knew—no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't escape this tangled mess of emotions. Not when she was caught between two men who had such a powerful hold on her.
The real question was: who would she choose, and how much would she lose in the process?
