Matsu heard the familiar hum of the gate opening and the soft crunch of tires on the driveway gravel. He knew what that meant—Yumiko was home from her date. Setting down his gardening tools, he dusted off his hands and walked toward the front of the house.
As he entered, he found Iyomei and Khamenei sitting cross-legged on the floor, engrossed in a game of Go Fish. The braille cards were spread out between them, and they seemed to be having a lively competition.
"Who's winning?" Matsu asked with a smile, pausing to watch them for a moment.
Khamenei grinned. "Me, obviously. Iyomei's trying, but I'm unstoppable today."
Iyomei smirked, shuffling the cards in her hand. "Don't get too cocky, Khame. I'm just warming up."
Matsu chuckled at their banter, then glanced around. "Hey, where's my tablet?"
Iyomei pointed toward the coffee table without looking up from her cards. "Right there, on the table."
"Thanks," Matsu said, walking over to retrieve the device. He quickly stowed it away, knowing the evening wasn't quite over yet. He wanted to give Yumiko some space to process her date, but he also couldn't deny his curiosity.
As he finished putting the tablet away, he heard the sound of footsteps approaching the door. Aki and Yumiko had arrived. Matsu paused, taking a deep breath to keep himself from rushing to the door. He needed to play it cool, let Yumiko come to him when she was ready.
The door opened, and Yumiko stepped inside, Aki following close behind. They both looked a little shy, their hands brushing together as they entered. Yumiko's cheeks were lightly flushed, and Aki's nervousness was still evident, though there was a soft smile on his face.
Matsu gave them a welcoming smile, stepping forward to greet them. "Welcome back, Yumiko. Aki, it's good to see you again."
Aki nodded respectfully, trying his best to keep his nerves in check. "Thank you, sir. I—uh, I mean, Matsu," he corrected himself quickly, remembering Matsu's preference for less formality. "Thank you for letting us borrow your car."
Matsu waved it off, his tone light. "It's no problem at all. I'm glad you both had a good time." He looked at Yumiko, his eyes warm. "How was it?"
Yumiko smiled, a mixture of excitement and shyness in her expression. "It was nice," she said simply, glancing at Aki before looking back at Matsu. "We went to the park and just talked... it was really good."
Matsu nodded, pleased to hear that. "I'm glad to hear it." He turned to Aki. "You're welcome to stay for dinner if you'd like, Aki."
Aki hesitated, looking at Yumiko, who gave him a small nod. "If it's not too much trouble, I'd like that," Aki replied, his voice a little more confident now.
Matsu smiled, clapping Aki gently on the shoulder. "No trouble at all. Let's head to the dining room, and we'll get started."
As they walked together toward the dining room, Matsu couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. Yumiko was growing up, making her own decisions, and it was clear she was in good hands with Aki. He glanced over at his sisters, who were now tidying up their card game, and felt a deep sense of contentment. Family was everything, and today had been a good day for all of them.
Matsu headed to the kitchen, rolling up his sleeves as he prepared to wash his hands. The rhythmic sound of water running and the clinking of utensils as he began setting up for dinner filled the air. He called out over his shoulder to his sisters, who were still lingering near the dining room table.
"Hey, Iyomei, Khamenei," Matsu said, his tone light but with a hint of playfulness. "Why don't you two sit opposite Yumiko and let her sit next to Aki?"
