" So we have the results of your pregnancy test back , Ms. Swan ," the physician assistant said cheerily as he sat on a wheeled stool in the examining room at the Women's Health Clinic in St. Paul's.
Matilda tried to smile but her heart was just not in it. She really didn't want this kid. Truthfully she hadn't wanted any of her children. When she ditched Nigel in the alleyway so many years ago it had almost been a relief to her. All he had ever done was cry constantly. He was a sweet adult but what an annoying baby he had been. No wonder nobody had wanted to take him in. And the others weren't much better. Mary thought she was better than everyone really. And Race....... Well , he was alright and not much trouble. Race pretty much reared himself. He was a sturdy capable little fellow. Just like his father had been. Damn. She almost missed Race Sr. Almost but not quite. " So what is the news , doctor? " She fought the desire to cross her fingers in a stupid hopeful gesture.
The doctor smiled kindly. " People should not put so much stock into those over the counter home tests. Most are not adequate at all. You did the right thing coming into the clinic for a proper test. "
She lifted her eyebrow in impatient curiosity. " So, am I......"
" Yes. You are pregnant, ma'am. I estimate you are about two months along even though you are not showing at all. Now , I don't know if this was a planned pregnancy but we need to discuss the possible risk factor of ..... someone your... advanced age bearing a child. "
As he droned on and on about her being decrepit and aged she sat in the chair looking and feeling stunned. This was definitely not planned or wanted but she could use it to her advantage. All she needed was to find the perfect way to get Nicholas in bed a couple times. Or at least once. The man was so old-fashioned and gentlemanly he would propose in a heartbeat.
He didn't have to know it was poor old Oscar's baby , did he? , she thought with a slight smile on her full sultry lips.
