" Dad said that Luci and the other kids are alright," Spencer said he drove himself and DuBuis back home. After all , wasn't that where the police told them to go? Back home to wait..... Wait for what though? The kidnapper to call with a ransom demand? The kidnapper to feel remorse and return Miracle? What were they supposed to be doing? What did any parent do in a situation like this? He tried to remember what Richard had done when Rebecca had ran away. Of course a child running away was a little different than a baby being kidnapped. He felt helpless. He felt alone because his husband wasn't talking to him. DuBuis was just looking out of the passenger window. At everything and probably nothing. " He said Richard and Winston and Faith as well as a few others we know are going out to search for her. We need to choose a good picture of her when we get home. Something that shows her face well. For the news. For flyers. For social media. "
He stopped speaking because he could feel his voice trembling. He was scared. He had never thought he would be a husband much less a father. But he was. And in the blink of an eye it had suddenly changed. Miracle was gone..... How could Glory take her eyes off the baby for one second? He wanted to cry but he was driving so he could not. He wanted to scream but he could not. Because he knew everyone expected him to fall apart. Just like when DuBuis had had the stroke. He had surprised them all then though. He had stayed strong then and he would now as well.
DuBuis finally spoke. His words were strained as he said," I never wanted her. "
Spencer was stunned. He couldn't believe what he had just heard. " What? ," was all he could muster out of his mouth.
" I never wanted her when you found her on the porch. I was afraid we would lose her. And that you would fall apart. That I would have to put you back together again after. But she stole my heart. Little by little. I started to look at her like she was a gift to us from God above. She was ours. " His voice faded away slightly until he began to speak again. " She is ours. And now she's gone. And I don't know what to do about it. I'm so afraid..... I'm afraid that God is ....... I don't know, punishing me for rejecting her first. I don't know. I just know I love her now and I want our daughter back again. And how could Glory let her get snatched ! How could anyone take an innocent baby! Where is she? Is she cold ? Hungry? Scared ? Is she...."
Spencer looked at his husband's tear stained face briefly before returning to the road ahead. " You always tell me and Joy says that God doesn't punish people like that. That He is all about love. Well if you are right then she is a gift to us. God didn't take her. Some evil person did. I don't know anything about that religion stuff. It's not my expertise. Math. Languages. That's where I stand out. I just have to believe she'll come home. Then we'll put her in a secure bubble until she's twenty one. "
DuBuis looked at his husband and realized he was serious. Almost against his will he began to laugh out loud. He loved this man so much. He loved his daughter. He closed his eyes and silently prayed for his family to be whole once more.
