With Nigel's attack the police were going off the assumption that it was a random act or one where he was a direct target. To the point that Nita and Wally had actually upon leaving the hospital went over to Barrington Academy to check on the whereabouts of one Niles Norland, Nigel's stepson/ brother in law and Richard's son.
Wally was sweet talking Gerald's secretary Edna into revealing that Niles had been in school all that day so far. His wife , Mary , as well, the older woman said with a sense of disapproval in her whole being.
Nita was questioning Niles in the headmaster's office with Gerald witnessing it. Not that she got many answers from the tall lean cocky high school senior who had merely leaned back in his seat and smirked at her. The only real comment he had made was to say that his father probably did it in a " lover's quarrel to rid himself of a nuisance golddigger". Nita didn't believe that. Any fool could see the pure love between Richard and Nigel Norland. Plus Richard had an alibi for the time of the attack. During the stabbing he was at the side of his injured son which Lewis and several medical staff could attest to. Richard Norland was not a suspect in any way. Not in Nita or Wally's eyes anyway.
As she met back up with her partner in the car to drive away from a school that cost more than probably their combined salaries Nita the primary detective got a call from Detective Nate Jacks.
" We got another one," Jacks growled over the phone. " Another butt lover stabbed in his house and found by his partner. Partner can't talk so uniforms can't get much from him. They found another note. This one is number two. Get back to headquarters. Because Norland is a billionaire's bastard son and Jacobs is a US senator's son we got ourselves a nice fucked up red ball mystery that the lieutenant says requires a task force working it. "
Nita sighed as she hung up and told Wally everything Jacks had said.
Wally, in the driver's seat, laughed harshly. " Good. I can use the overtime. Anniversary coming up. The wife wants to go to the Bahamas. "
