" I didn't call the Rebel show about a paternity test , LuLu ! ," Jonah said rather more louder than his usual tone. He shook his head at his wife who was glaring at him with her hands on her hips. " Why would I? I know Sapphire, Pearl and Ruby are my daughters. You would never cheat on me or lie to me. "
Nettie Jean snorted as she finished eating her second helping of breakfast.
Bubba Joe belched before retorting," What different it make who called anyhows ? Just go on it, gal. You and Jonah here. I hears that gay singer man Rebel gives all kinds of gifts and stuff on that show of his. Cars. Books. CDs. All kind of stuff. He's like a fairy Santa Claus. "
LuLu swallowed hard. " It matters because I don't need a paternity test. It's ridiculous. We're not going on it. No way. Absolutely not. I just want to know who called and lied on me. " Her eyes narrowed. " I bet it was that man. Spencer. He's so petty. He wants us out of the house and he wants to destroy my happy marriage. "
Nettie Jean laughed. " How it destroying your marriage if you ain't got nothing to hide? Daddy is right. Go on Rebel and clean up good. Unless you think there's a chance......"
Jonah looked at LuLu.
Bubba Joe looked at LuLu.
Nettie Jean looked at LuLu.
LuLu turned bright red and averted her eyes from all of them. " Of course there's no chance of Jonah not being the father," she lied as she stuck her hands in the big pockets of her apron and crossed her fingers. " I just don't want to be humiliated on tv. I think the Rebel show and all talk shows are so tacky. "
Jimmy stepped into the kitchen and yawned. " Babies are crying, Ma. And I think the pig is hungry. "
LuLu pursed her lips. " Everyone is always hungry around here. Jimmy, get some breakfast and then get the hell out to school. You're late enough. You'll have to catch a bus. "
Jimmy shrugged. " I ain't going to school. School is a waste of time. I hate it. I'm going to get a job. "
Bubba Joe nodded. " Sounds smart to me. Book learning ain't never put no food on the table. LuLu here says the man next door has a brother owns a restaurant over in next county. Something fancy. Why don't you ask him to get you a job there ? Owes you, doesn't he , since it's his fault you was locked up. "
Jimmy ignored his grandfather. The last thing he wanted was to see Spencer Norland - Lane. And , not because he blamed him like his family did. Because the guilt wouldn't let him look the man in his eyes.
He might not have shot the former math professor and put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life but he felt like he was just as responsible as Phil.
" Nah. I'll find my own job. "
Jonah said tersely," Well , make sure it's a legal one, is all I got to say. Your mama and I have enough on our plate besides worrying about you. "
