Adah

Can one night last an eternity?

I was holding on to a man for my dear life who was second away from claiming me just the way he threatened. The man with whom I keep bumping into and whose name I didn't even know. All I know is that he killed people without regret or remorse. His rapid heartbeat was the only anchor I could listen and hold on to. When I heard glass cracking beneath someone's shoe, I wound my arms around him and clung to him with all my might. I couldn't care less if my palms were pricking with a slash I got when I broke the drinking glass earlier.

I just wanted to go home and rest my head on my dad's lap. Somehow his warm hand around me was the only solace I was finding in that situation. I should be scared of him, but instead, he was the one protecting me. Why was I feeling secure in his arms?

"Adah," he whispered, removing his hand from my mouth, and I could only nod my head as a sign I was hearing him.

"You need to let me go," he said, and I clutched him tighter, shaking my head.

"C̄hạn t̂xngkār h̄ı̂ p̄hū̂h̄ỵing khn nận mī chīwit xyū̀ rāngwạl lĕkn̂xy s̄ảh̄rạb chạychna k̄hxng reā nı khụ̄n nī̂!"(I want the woman alive. A small reward for our victory tonight!) the moment I heard, I felt a rumble through his chest before his hold tightened around me. I don't know what they said, but it only infuriated him.

A sob was threatening to escape, and to stop it, I pressed my lips against his chest. At the exact moment, I heard him suck in a deep breath.

"I won't let anyone hurt you, I promise," he said, and just like that, I believed him.

Why? I don't know.

He made me stick to the wall where no one could see me and pat my head before moving into action. I was panting at my place, covering my mouth with my palms. A trail of cold sweat glided over my spine in dread. Due to the moonlight penetrating through the shattered glass wall, I could make out the silhouette of three men standing close to each other with their arms raised and guns ready. I saw him drifting towards the trio like an enraged panther.

Since the attackers were looking in the other direction, they didn't notice him approaching with a menacing gait. Before I could apprehend his intent, he fists the knife, his back flexed with his movement, and like a panther, he lunges on one of them. A scream locked in my mouth when I saw the knife plug into one of the attacker's necks before it was pulled out in a sleek move.

My eyes widened at how swiftly he made a move. Not only did he kill a man with just a flick of a knife, but he also used him as a shield. Before any of them could get a warning, he grabbed the arm of the same man and shot the other one with his gun, killing him instantly. It happened so abruptly even the victims were too shocked to react. In a matter of three seconds, two men were already lying dead. However, the third one was quick to get back to his senses and fired in the direction he heard the sound from. By then, the devil dropped to the ground and threw his knife at the remaining attacker. The knife stabbed his leg, making him fall to the ground with his gun tossed aside.

"Khuṇ mị̀ khwr lāk p̄hū̂h̄ỵing k̄hxng c̄hạn pị nı reụ̄̀xng nī̂ txn nī̂ mạn pĕn reụ̄̀xng s̄̀wntạw."(you shouldn't have dragged my woman in this. Now, it's personal.) The devil said with a sinister tone, drawing the gun.

I flinched when the next second, he shot him on his head. A grunt from the one he stabbed in the neck brought his attention to him, and just like that, he shot him on his head too. Bile raised inside me, but there was no time for me to even think about it when a loud explosion got our attention.

"Fuck!" he boomed before gathering all the guns and walking towards him hastily.

"You stay here," he ordered.
