Darkness.
Everywhere I see, I saw only dark. I don't know if I'm falling or rooted in one place. I should move, but where and before I knew, a hand from behind covered my mouth.
"Aryan!"
My shriek resonated, that made me wake me up out of my stupor. I was panting, my gaze to find the one who always came to my rescue. That man, with the darkest eyes and sadic expression. Yet he always kept every promise he made to me.
"Aryan!"
I screamed in fear finding myself alone. I couldn't even recollect where I was, but my attention was only to see those black eyes assuring me, his familiar warmth to engulf me... I need him.
I was about to scream again when he came out of the bathroom, wrapping a towel.
"What happened?" his voice laced with concern, but I was not in the state to be rational. As soon as he sat on the bed, I jumped on him.
"Where were you? You should be with me here and not leave me alone," I cried in his neck.
Feeling him pushing me, I tightened my hold on him while a sob escaped my lips.
"Adah," his voice seemingly defeated, he pulled me closer to him.
The water droplet dripping from his hair tickled my cheek, but I couldn't let him go yet. I needed him, at least till I could gather myself. My heart pounded so hard in my chest that I knew Aryan could feel its beat as his own.
Before he spoke, I felt his body tense: "It was me who put you in the forest last night."
My own breathing hitched at his confrontation, but I still held on to him. And I don't know why.
He chuckled dryly, "And you are still holding onto me."
He didn't wait for me and continued, "I wanted to teach you a lesson for yesterday's stunt. Do you think I brought you to this island just like that? Do you think Osama is here taking care of our security for fun?"
I could only shake my head against him with closed eyes.
"If someone finds you with me, trust me, Adah, your life will be over. Even your family will not be spared. Are you ready to take the hit?" he asked.
Then why did he drag me into his life?
As if reading my thoughts, he said, "You are meant to be fuck toy. Since I can't break the promise I made you, I'm not doing anything, but that doesn't mean you can push my limit, Adah. When I say something, don't defy it. I'm a monster who doesn't like being provoked. You are most delusional if you think you can change me into a human."
I muffled my sobs, letting tears fall over my cheeks and on his shoulder. I know he was a monster, then why my heart doesn't want to believe it?
He slid his finger into my hair, "Answer me." His touch was anything but threatening.
"Then why do you keep promising me?"
"What?"
I pulled away, wanting to see the truth in his eyes that his words were not convincing me.
I whispered, "Why do you keep every promise you made to me?"
I swallow, flitting my gaze between his eyes, trying to desperately search in his eyes, things that my heart was whispering.
His expression hardened, his jaw clenched, but his gaze....it remained troubled.
"Careful there, Adah. I might one day collect payments for all promises kept, even if you are willing or not," with that, he released his hold on me and stood up.
What does he mean?
A knock caught my attention, and before I could ask Aryan what he meant, he walked to the door and opened it. Matt stood at the threshold looking sheepish.
"I brought breakfast for Adah as you ordered," he said without meeting Aryan's eyes.
"Make sure she eats well," he replied before moving to the closet.
By the time I freshened up, there was no sign of Aryan. Only Matt remained, waiting for me.
"Aryan?" I asked, to which Matt only shook his head.
I know Matt knew where Aryan was, but his silence spoke what he couldn't say otherwise. I wanted to ask why I was made to eat in the room or why he was unusually silent, but one look at him stopped me.
He replied vaguely to some of my questions, and only when I asked about June, he looked himself. I don't even know if it was breakfast or lunch, but as soon as I finished it, Matt left me to rest but not before reminding me to be in the gym as ordered by Aryan.
"Trekking is not difficult, but you need to build stamina to walk for long distances," Aryan started his session with this line.
If anything, he looked unfazed about our earlier conversation, like it was all a dream I had. My eyes fell on Osama doing something with the strange equipment I hadn't seen before. He would usually jump into any conversation whether anyone asked him or not, and here he was, quiet and minding his business.
"Eyes on me, Adah," I returned my eyes to Aryan, "let's do a basic warm-up before you start off on the treadmill, followed by another 20 mins on the cross trainer."
I was edgy with him staring at me like a hawk the entire time I was doing stretches. The feeling intensified when he stood behind me and guided my arm to stretch more. The air conditioning did a pathetic job of cooling my senses. With him looming around him with an intense expression, I was finding it hard to focus.
Come to think of it, I still don't understand the need for all this just for trekking. It was nothing but walking, right?
Soon I found my answer to my lame assumption. What I assumed to be just walking on a treadmill turned out to suck my energy. At first, it was all walking, but then he changed the inclination, and I was finding it more challenging to keep my walk steady. My throat burned, and I didn't even realize when I started breathing through my mouth. It was only when he asked me to inhale through my nose and exhale from my mouth, did I notice.
If experience on the treadmill was painful, cross trainer turns out to be a nightmare. My calves started protesting to walk any further, but with a devil standing behind me, gauging my every move, I couldn't even slouch in my place. The moment my speed slowed, he would growl, and my back would stiffen in a warning.
What looked like hours of walking turned out to be an hour only. I lay on the floor, panting, least bothered by two men in the same room. My breathing turned rapid, greedily sucking air that could wane the dryness in my chest. My throat was parched, and I felt someone tie rocks to my legs.
"Pathetic," someone murmured, but I didn't need to open my eyes to know.
"Yeah, and your point is?"
A groan was the reply I got, followed by Aryan's command, "I didn't ask you to take a break, Osama."
I wanted to smack that Osama guy for his remark. I was not a killer in the making to have the stamina at par with them.
"Forests are rugged. With your stamina, you will give up after 15 mins of walking," his voice had my eyes open.
He stood near my head, with his arms crossed and looking at me like Titan looking at a midget. I saw his eyes roaming over my entire body and halting at my heaving chest. I don't know if it was my hallucination or if I witnessed a familiar fire in his eyes. Before I could comprehend, he averted his gaze.
