My forehead furrowed, hearing her cry.
I stood outside the door, waiting for her breakdown, and soon enough, Adah let out a heart wrecking wail. My hold tightened around the door's knob, but I remained in my place, reigning my urge to barge in and hug the delicate girl.
Girl?
She was no longer a girl. She became my woman when unknowingly, she gave her every first to me, and I sealed that fact by marrying her. To say I was surprised to find my ring on her ring finger would be an understatement. I wanted to probe her about why she was still wearing my ring, but I had pressing issues to take care of. Marrying Adah was just the tip of the iceberg.
On cue, my phone buzzed, and without looking at the caller, I answered, "Sir."
"In my office, thirty minutes."
With that, the line got disconnected. Leaning my head back on the door, I closed my eyes. I knew it was bound to happen, but I was exhausted, having to look at Adah crying and not being able to hold her close to me. Every tear that fell from her eyes went straight to my heart. Every time she sobbed, my heart clenched with an emotion I was not ready to acknowledge.
The thought of her hating me ripped me from inside. But did I regret marrying her? The answer was as clear as a bright sunny day.
NO.
Even if we live in a parallel universe and confront the same situation, I would still choose to marry her at any given time.
"Baba?" Amma's voice brought me out of my thoughts.
When Adah let out another heart wrecking wail, I faced Amma only to see realization washing over her.
"She didn't eat anything. Make sure she does, and if she refuses, tell her I would be glad to feed her."
Ignoring Amma's questioning gaze, I walked past her but halted in the tracks when she said, "Women are delicate. They break if forced, but if you tend them with love, they blossom."
A dry chuckle left me on its own. I know I want Adah, and for that, I would go to any extent but connecting my obsession to love was an illusion.
"Love doesn't do shit. There is a price for everything in this world, including my wife's acceptance of our marriage."
I know she wanted to talk about Adah, but I have a meeting with Sir, and for that, I need to be in my element. This was just the beginning of the game, and I needed to make sure Adah's name was left out for her own good. When I reached Sir's office, I was directly led in as if they were asked to notify as soon as I came.
Sir was perched in his chair, and when he saw me, he dropped the pen and closed the file.
"Aryan, did you get married?" Sir's voice made me halt in the tracks.
As respect demands, I always lean before him, placing my hand on my chest, and he pats my shoulder in return. This time, he asked me instead of letting me greet him.
"Yes."
There was no point denying when I knew who squealed like a pig before Sir and told about my marriage within a few hours.
He rested his forearm on the desk and leaned forward with a frown.
"When I asked you for my daughter, you said you don't want to get married, and looking at your past, I didn't insist. I knew if I insisted, you might marry her out of respect, but none of you would be happy. Now you are telling me you got married. Neither have I heard about the girl before nor your decision."
I know he was not accusing or talking out of malice. He was curious at the gradual changes that he had been noticing since I lost millions in deal negotiation. He knew I was distracted by something and advised me to get over it, which was the partial reason for taking Adah to the island. I really wanted her to be out of my system, and then I would be back to my old self. Only if I knew that was all wishful thinking.
