"Mom, I promise to call you as soon as I land," Lisa said, packing for her trip to Korea.

"Your grandmother is very conservative; she has never seen you. I am shocked that she is asking you to visit her. She never approved of your father's and my marriage. So, if you're feeling uncomfortable about going if you're unsure, we can postpone this visit to another time."

"I'll be fine... you know I'm always up for a challenge," Lisa said, striving to keep her nervousness from showing.

Lisa is a distinguished violinist in the UK, raised by her African American mother the daughter of a renowned pianist, and her father, a lawyer at a prestigious law firm in the States. Lisa's Korean father was born and raised in Daegu by very conservative parents: a mother who taught at a law school in Korea, and a father who served as a Cyber Security President, also in Korea. Lisa's parents met while they were both working in Korea.

Lisa's parents met and fell in love but faced ostracism from the conservative generations before them who disapproved of interracial marriages and firstborns not preserving their birthright heritage. Although they lived modestly and were financially secure, they chose to leave Korea due to issues of race and the abstract norms of wealth, inheritance, rites of passage, and the expectation of arranged marriages. Lisa's father was abandoned by his parents and moved to the UK from Korea to raise his daughter.

Lisa's mother made every effort to mend the rift between her in-laws and her husband yet his mother utterly disregarded her attempts.

Six months ago, she received a call from Lisa's father's mother, requesting that Lisa visit them. Initially, Lisa's mother found it strange that they would want to see their grandchild now, especially since Lisa was an adult. to make things worse Lisa's father had passed away a year ago never seeing his parents since he left Korea to marry Lisa's mother.

Lisa's mother vividly recalls the day she received that call... It was a cold and distant conversation that left her shaken by the sheer lack of compassion over the loss of a child. Lisa and her mother transported her father back to Korea and conducted his service according to his wishes. Lisa's paternal grandparents attended to bid farewell but departed without maintaining contact with Lisa or her mother, until now.
