We arrive at the classroom, just a few minutes before Mrs Geltrude, our literature teacher, enters.
《Good morning》
She greets us, the teacher, as soon as she sets foot in the classroom, and we stand up to greet her.
《Good morning, Ms. Geltrude!》
It's the little play we have to put on every day, as soon as a teacher enters the classroom.
《Sit down and take out the book on page 205, and read it carefully because you have to answer the questions afterwards》
He says meanwhile as he sits down on his throne behind the desk and takes out the ledger.
《While you read, I'll take the roll call, and do so in silence! 》
Having said that he starts with the list of names, there are 20 of us in the class, and we're in the 6th class out of 8 years, almost at the end, then we either go to an academy or a boarding school, if not we work, which almost everyone in the class will do.
The text, which we have to read, is a canto from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, although that is part of Italian literature and not San Marino literature, it's one of those things I don't understand, I know San Marino doesn't have much literature but at least it has something.
《You see, today she's dressed in pink and orange, but she's wearing a black coat, she doesn't know how to dress up! 》
《Yes, plus she's wearing hiking boots, they look awful on her? 》
I hear two of my companions from the back bench, snickering, like geese.
Poor Madame Geltrude, she's in this state because her son who had moved to Bordeaux, France, has been drafted as a soldier to defend the French borders from the Germans, and she's constantly anxious that he might not return...
But that's why every now and then during class, I see her pick up a rosary and start reciting the prayers.
《Mrs. Gentili Anna?》
We hear the teacher say my friend's name.
《Present, Ms. Geltrude! 》
She exclaims, getting up from her chair to say hello.
《Mr. Gasperoni Marco?》
The teacher asks after a while and after a good minute I see my cousin get up from the desk, which makes the teacher get nervous.
《Present Sir Geltrude! 》
Next, it's my turn.
《Mr. Gasperoni Linda?》
《Present Mrs. Geltrude! 》
《You're always on time with your reply, I can tell you're from Switzerland, not like your cousin.》
Immediately the whole class bursts out laughing at the teacher's statement, making Marco blush with embarrassment.
I sit down and continue with the assignment.
It's going to be a long day!♡•○•♡
