Immediately I feel my body freeze completely in place as if I had frozen. They are Germans... I know my family might be German, but I hope and pray they have nothing to do with the Nazis.
Jakob stares at them with hatred, but also with fear, after all they are armed from head to toe, as if they had just come out of a battle and they are the victors. They are coming from the German border, or at least that is the direction.
That shot will have alarmed everyone at home, but also the whole neighbourhood. This is a neutral zone, so armies must have a signed and stamped permit to enter or pass through... but then they don't respect the limits of the agreements at all. Even shooting, is already forbidden by normal law think for people from another state.
《Jakob, what do we do now? 》
I ask him in a whisper, trying not to make any noise, my life and Jakob's life is at stake.
We remain silent as one of the five men starts talking.
《The Führer was really nice to us, he made us take a holiday to recover the child. Long live the Führer! 》
And his praise is joined by the other four men.
《Long live the Führer!!》
Jakob and I stand there horrified, listening to them blather on about nonsense, and about the communists, French and English, most of them were insults and stereotypes.
The Germans decide to camp right under our tree, because as we understand it, tomorrow morning before dawn they will take the 'baby' and leave for Berlin. They did not mention the details of the plan, but I think it is not much more articulate than we perceived it to be.
As soon as they are all asleep, we decide to put something quick under our teeth, and then go to sleep, hoping that the next day everything will be back to normal, and that there are no Nazis in the woods and above all that there is no camp below us.
We wake up early in the morning and just in time to see them coming out of the woods, in the same direction that Jakob and I took the day before...
I think I've connected the pieces of the puzzle, the little girl they're looking for... it's me... at Grandma and Grandpa's house, they'll never find me, because I haven't been there since yesterday. They might even hurt everyone if they don't find me in the house.
Jakob and I decide to head home, leaving quite a distance between us and the Nazis. I would rather not have a gun pointed at my temple, or a bullet in my head.
As soon as we get home, we see Grandpa talking to the Nazis, Grandma, Aunt Beatrix and Uncle Carlo looking at them unsure of what will become of them all. Grandma and aunt are crying, probably because Jakob and I left home without telling them, Uncle Carlo, he is the usual stereotypical Italian, he stands there and stares at the Germans with a look of contempt, he is my idol.
He earns a dream salary, he lives well, he works three days a week, he has a beautiful house in Italy, in front of a lake not far from the Swiss border, I saw it in one of the many photos in the kitchen.
Jakob and I stay behind some bushes for a while longer, and we see a Nazi take Grandpa and throw him to the ground and point a rifle at his head, his grandmother and aunt were begging the Nazis not to kill them.
Jakob at that scene could not stay there hiding while his family was almost killed, so he gets up and runs towards them, I try to stop him. But the only thing I tell him is.
《Don't be a snitch, and don't tell anyone where I am! Please.》♡•○•♡
