After telling Uncle Carlo everything, I locked myself in my room, I even skipped lunch, which worried Grandma in no small measure. But my appetite completely disappeared after replaying all the events of this morning in my mind.
《Linda... It's me, Aunt Teresa... do you want to talk about it?》
I hear Aunt's voice from outside the door, but I don't want to see anyone for a while.
《I want to be alone for a while longer, I'll come downstairs around four o'clock in the afternoon, alright?
《Yes, yes, that's fine... then see you later...》
Aunt says then turning away from my room door
《I've still never managed to get into my grandparents' room, to get the key to my mum's room.
Maybe today I can.
《Linda! There's ice cream! 》
I hear Aunt Benedetta's voice loudly from the probable kitchen. 《But just as I answered Aunt Teresa, I'm now answering them.
《I'm not hungry!!》
I answer them, raising my voice to be heard by them.
I decide to continue the diary by updating it on the events that happened this morning.
I think it's four o'clock in the afternoon by now, but the urge to go downstairs and see the relatives asking me with a look to tell them, I just don't feel like it.
《Grandma is very worried about you! Do you want to come with us to the playground, if not only Grandpa will stay here and listen to the radio with the news as usual, and fall asleep as soon as it starts! 》
I can hear Antonio's baby voice, he's a very smart child and understands when the situation is serious.
《You go, I don't feel like going out, and tell grandma not to worry I'm fine》.
《All right, whatever you say! 》
He replies and after a while I hear him running down the stairs.
It's only after about 10 minutes that I hear the front door slam and after that there's complete silence in the house. I decide to go downstairs to see if everything is quiet and all I see is Grandpa snoring in the armchair, while the radio continues to talk.
"... France has fallen! The Germans have taken over Paris, now the British are alone in this battle! That was the latest news for now, after the weather we will move on to Italian state news."
I finish listening to the radio there and proceed upstairs, towards what Uncle Carlo pointed out to me as my grandparents' room.
《Where could they possibly have hidden the key to their daughter's room... right! In grandma's jewellery box! 》
I immediately thought of the most likely place, where I can find what I'm looking for.
I open the jewellery box, it looks old, it's faded white with floral themed designs.
Inside I find necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings, not to mention crucifixes and plastic gems, I think it is a gift from some child.
And underneath one of these in a bag is a key, steel, well kept, without a scratch or a stain, it looks like it has never been used.
But that's not going to stop me as I want to know who my dad is and who my mum was.
So I grab it and immediately sprint towards the attic, and pull out the key from the bag, but I freeze as soon as I'm about to put it into the slot.
《Okay, Mom, now I'll know who you are and who I am.》
With that said, I turn the latch, opening the door.
The room is covered in a pile of dust, as if no one has been in there for years.
The bed is still neatly made, the books are neatly arranged, and the statuettes are neatly lined up.
Along the walls are small pictures, some of them crocheted, while others are framed photos of Mum over the years, but the thing that catches my attention the most is a small package and a letter on the right bedside table.
I decide to approach it cautiously, and pick it up, the package is dated 16 August 1927, that's the same year I was born... but it arrived a few months after my birth, on 7 May...♡•○•♡
