《Now that we are alone, tell me what you know about your father》.
He asks me in a polite but serious tone, pulling out some documents from the top desk drawer in a binder marked 'Italien-Deutschland Verwaltung' which in Italian is 'Italy-Germany Administration', and then takes out a blank sheet of paper and a pen.
《I know that he wasn't married to my mum, that according to my uncle and my family he's a bad man and a monster, at home there's my mum's room, inside there's a letter from my dad to my mum but it's still unopened and a little package. And I know that he's currently living in Germany, and that he's looking for me.》
I see him taking notes on what I said, and then he seems lost in thought for a few seconds, looking like he wants to say something, when the phone rings.
《Ja? Sergeant Hibermann berichtet, wie kann ich Ihnen helfen?(Yes? Sergeant Hibermann reporting, how can I help you? 》
She says into the phone, serious at first and later with a smile on her face.
Wait but the German teacher's last name is Hibermann so they are familiar....
《Ja, ja! Ich werde zum Mittagessen nicht zu Hause sein, ich habe hier noch etwas zu erledigen, wir sehen uns heute Abend.(Yes, yes! I won't get home for lunch I have a little work to complete here, see you tonight)》
Maybe they're brothers, they look a bit alike in appearance, but in character I don't know.
《Tschüss, tschüss, bis heute Abend, tschüss!(Bye, bye, see you tonight, bye!)》
And having said that, he ends the call and settles back comfortably in his chair and looks at me afterwards, trying to remember something, maybe what he wanted to say to me before the call.
《So, shall we say?
《That my father is in Germany and that he's looking for me.》
《Ah yes, okay you don't know anything else about your father, didn't you look into the sender of the letter, or maybe the initials of the first name or last name, or the signature or some distinguishing mark? 》
I don't remember, I only know that he had a stamp with a palace on it and 'Deutschland' written underneath.
《I'll check the parcel and the letter again tonight and then we'll continue tomorrow, alright? Or are you busy?》
I ask him and he, with a smile replies.
《No problem, you can come here whenever you want, if you want to hide from someone come and take refuge in this office and forbidden to enter here to all other officers unless I give them permission, but I'll talk to Clara, the secretary you saw earlier, not to even ask you where you're going, to let you come here quietly, in fact maybe she can even tell you if I'm late and where to find me.》
《All right, one more question, your surname is Hibermann, are you related to Professor Heidi Hibermann? 》
《Perspicacious girl, and yes she's my sister, is she your teacher? If she's not good tell me right away I'll chastise her! 》
He said to end with another contagious laugh, to which I replied.
《No, on the contrary, she's a very good teacher! Did she also teach in Germany? 》
《No, no, she started here, in Germany she was a housewife!》
I was shocked by her answer, Professor Hibermann was a housewife, but she's great at teaching!
《Seriously! But she's great at it! Why did she also come here to San Marino? If she was a housewife shouldn't she stay at home? 《Why is she here?
《See, she came with me because her husband was a soldier but he passed away recently, he was assassinated and she wanted to change her view so she came with me and to forget about her husband, she wanted to start working, so I helped her enter the school for the new subject.》
《I understand, I would have done that too, after all she's also here to keep you company during your work period, then when you finish staying here will she return with you to Germany? 》
I ask him, after all I would miss the support and friendship I have with Alex and the teacher at school, I would feel alone again....
《I don't know how much longer I'll have to stay here, but I do know one thing, until something super urgent happens I won't be called back to Germany.》
《Perfect then! 》
《Now get your stuff, I'll drive you home, it's late and you should have been home for almost two hours already!》
Geez! How time flies, Grandma must be dying of a heart attack and Uncle must be even angrier than usual, I'm literally screwed!
《Thanks and sorry, you always have to take care of me! 》
《But it's not a problem, you're like a little sister to me, I have an older one and a younger one now, I have to take care of both of them...》
She says mussing my hair again.
《Come on, it's still a long way.》
《She says holding out her hand for me to walk, of course I gladly accept it.
《Maybe I still remember the way to your house! 》
《Let's see, now you're being questioned let's see if you'll get a good grade! 》
Saying that I run up the stairs with Alex chasing after me, running in turn, under the puzzled eyes of the secretary. She stares first at Alex and then at me trying to understand what is going on and why there is a soldier playfully chasing a little girl around the town hall.
But the only thing that is important now is to go home and have fun with Alex! Although I would like time to pass more slowly than usual, I enjoy Alex's company, he is funny but can be serious at the right moments.
