"So let me get this straight. You and Sophie were doing a mind exercise and she just fainted?" a male voice asked, barely containing his displeasure.
Where am I?
"Yes, but-" another voice answered, sounding just as irritated, before being cut off by the first voice.
What happened?
"But not before you saw something in her mind that you weren't supposed to," he finished.
In a flash it all came back. Telepathy class. The mind exercise. Fainting.
There was a pause before either voice spoke again.
"What even was it? A fantasy?" the second male asked in confused annoyance.
So I was... in the school infirmary...?
"I..."
And the boys talking around me were....
"She was looking at you in a suit, standing at an altar, Keefe. What am I supposed to make of that?"
Keefe. That's who the first speaker was. And the second... the second was-
"Fitz-" Keefe started.
"She was my girlfriend. Not yours. Mine. I don't know what you did to influence her thoughts like that, but it needs to stop. Once we find out her biological parents, we'll be matched together and everything will be fine," Fitz explained emphatically.
I scoffed in my head. Yeah, right. But at least he hasn't figured out it's an actual memory.
There was no response from Keefe and I imagined him nodding. I felt more in control and conscious now; maybe I would be able to open my eyes.
Hoping not to draw attention to the fact that I was awake, I slowly cracked my eyes open, only to find that Keefe—my Keefe—was already looking right at me. Fitz, on the other hand, was glaring at Keefe, fire in his eyes.
Keefe's eyes widened slightly as he saw my eyes open, and Fitz quickly jerked his head to look at me. I immediately shut them, hoping to fool Fitz. I was really not in the mood to talk to anyone but Keefe.
"What?" Fitz snapped.
"I thought I saw her hand twitch, but it must've just been my imagination."
"Right. Well, I think it's best if we both leave and get to class," Fitz said pointedly.
Someone's being passive aggressive.
"Yeah, um, okay," Keefe said and after a minute, I heard two sets of footsteps walk out of the infirmary.
I waited a couple minutes before I opened my eyes once more, this time finding no one left in the room.
A split second later, Elwin walked into the room holding a glass vial with purple liquid inside of it.
"Sophie! Oh, good, you're awake!"
I cracked a smile and Elwin came to the edge of the bed I was lying on.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, setting the vial down on a side table before flashing a couple multi-colored lights around my head.
"Fine, I guess."
"Mmm. Well, it doesn't seem like anything is wrong with you that I can tell. But just to play it safe," Elwin said, picking up the vial once more, "you should really drink this. It should replenish your energy and cleanse your mind."
"Right," I grimaced, looking at the bottle. "Do I really have to?"
Elwin nodded. I uncapped it and chugged its contents quickly, seconds later gagging.
"Why do they have to taste so bad?" I winced and Elwin shrugged, holding back a smile.
"Haven't you heard that the best things always come with a little bad at the beginning?" another voice chimed in.
I looked towards the door and found Keefe leaning against the frame, smirking. He's talking about us.
"Do they?" I grinned. "Do you have an example?"
"I can think of a few," he answered, winking, and I giggled.
"I'll be in my office if you need me," Elwin grinned. Well, at least we had someone who thought we were cute together.
Keefe waited until Elwin closed the door before crossing over to my bed and sitting on the edge.
"How are you?" he asked tenderly, taking my hand in both of his. I melted.
"So much better now that you're here," I answered, smiling so hard my cheeks hurt.
"Well, obviously," Keefe chuckled, "But are you okay?"
"I think so."
"Do you know why you fainted?" he asked carefully, and I could see the worry he was trying to mask reflected in his eyes.
I paused before answering his question.
"Umm..."
Keefe looked at me curiously. "Ummm...?"
"That may have... kinda been on purpose..." I said slowly and shock registered on Keefe's face. Soon after, a smirk. Then, a laugh.
"I guess I should've expected that," he shook his head, smiling.
"I wasn't planning to, but then Tiergan had us do a complicated exercise. A memory leaked out of my shield and I just panicked!"
"And that memory was our wedding," Keefe smiled, seconds later turning into a suggestive smirk. "I guess it's probably a good thing it was a memory of our wedding and not later that night. Although, the look on Fitzy-Poo's face would've been priceless."
I choked out a startled laugh.
"Keefe!"
"What?" he asked innocently, but the smirk playing at the edge of his lips gave him away. "It was just a thought."
"You," I said, jokingly scolding.
"Hey, to be fair, none of this would have happened if you'd just ditched with me!" he defended, raising his arms.
"I was going to, but you weren't there during lunch!" I exclaimed, pouting mockingly.
"Young me got me stuck in detention this week," he sulked and I laughed.
"Why am I not surprised by that in the slightest?"
"Because I'm a magnet for a trouble," he explained, tipping hs imaginary hat to me and winking. "And yet, I seem to recall that you're a sucker for trouble," Keefe murmured.
"I believe you might be right, sir."
"Oh how I love you, Sophie Elizabeth Sencen," Keefe whispered before dipping towards me to press his lips to mine.
Just as I sat up to press myself closer to him, a sound startled me and I pulled away.
Elwin stood at the door to his office, his mouth in an 'O' shape before turning into a smirk.
"Don't worry, I won't tell," he said knowingly before walking out again.
I laughed, shocked, and Keefe shrugged.
"How about this? We tell the supportive people we're dating, and then leave people like Fitz and Grady for our younger selves to deal with?" Keefe proposed, grinning. "They should be back any day now, after all."
"Sure, why not?" I laughed and mentally calculated how much time we had left in the past. "Let's make the most of our last day here."
Pro trip (except I'm not a pro so I'm not entirely sure I can call it that...haha): Get dressed up in an outfit you feel good in and go to a coffee shop to write. Not kidding, the words were flowing out of me. FLOWING, y'all. I haven't been able to write that easily in a while, and I actually feel confident about it and had fun. Only problem? If this keeps up, I might run out of money because I spend all of it on coffee lol
