As I stood there, lost in my own thoughts, Avni's words echoed in my mind. Does Yash really love me? It wasn't just the possibility of his feelings that rattled me-it was the fact that those feelings suddenly mattered to me. When had I started caring so much about what Yash thought of me? The realization left me unsettled, a whirlpool of foreign emotions spinning inside me, tugging at parts of me I didn't know existed.
Suddenly, Avni snapped her fingers in front of my face, pulling me out of my thoughts. "Where are you lost?"
I blinked, shaking my head. "Nowhere," I mumbled quickly, trying to brush off the overwhelming thoughts. "Can I know where the washroom is?"
Avni pointed toward the stairs. "Go up and right, but-wait!" she called out, stopping me in my tracks.
I turned back to her, eyebrows raised. "What happened?"
Before she could respond, there was a knock at the door. My heart leapt into my throat, panic flooding my veins. Someone's here! I was in Avni's room without my disguise-my turban and beard were off. What if someone saw me like this?
Avni glanced at me, seeing my wide-eyed panic, and chuckled. "Relax. It's probably just Noor."
"But what if it's someone else?" I said, my voice is rising with anxiety. "I'll hide behind the couch. You open the door."
Avni rolled her eyes, a smirk playing on her lips as she said, "No one else is coming. Everyone's at the party. Breathe in, breathe out... Haaafffffuuu."
Her calmness only made my panic seem more ridiculous, but I didn't have time to argue. Grabbing my turban and uniform, I hurried behind the couch, crouching down, my heart hammering against my chest.
Avni, thoroughly entertained by my antics, muttered loud enough for me to hear, "I've heard opposites attract, but wow, seeing it in action is something else. Yash bhaiya is so calm, and here his love is a walking panic button. May God bless him with even more patience."
Her teasing was relentless, each word aimed at me as if she were enjoying my discomfort. If I wasn't hiding, I would've snapped back at her, maybe even reminded her how irresponsible her brother could be. Like that time he locked me in his room for ten hours without a second thought. But here I was, crammed behind a couch, while Avni went near door and unlocked it, and all I could do was simmer in silence.
Avni unlocked the door, and for a few seconds, there was only silence. The kind of silence that made sweat bead up on my forehead, even in the cool, air-conditioned room. My heart pounded as I clasped my hands together in silent prayer, Please, no more surprises tonight.
Then I heard Avni's voice break the tension. "Come out! It's Noor, just like I said. She's a good homo sapien-doesn't gossip, only eats."
A sharp smack echoed through the room.
"Aaahh! Stop hitting my shoulder!" Avni cried out.
Then Noor's voice followed, soft and reassuring. "Hey, it's okay, come out."
Slowly, I stood up, revealing myself from behind the couch. Noor stood there, her expression kind, while Avni stood beside her, arms crossed with a triumphant smirk. "Remember I told you about the Vansh and Vanya double role? And the CEO romance like in those Wattpad stories? Well, meet the female lead of that story."
I froze, my eyes widening in shock. Noor knows too? I couldn't believe this was happening. The weight of everything crashing down on me was unbearable. I was done-done with the secrecy, done with the charade. I started walking toward the door, ready to leave, but Avni and Noor quickly moved in front of me, blocking my escape.
Before I could snap, Noor stepped closer, her voice calm and genuine. "I'm sorry about Avni's words. She loves novels and tends to connect them with real-life people. Don't worry, I'm not in any position to spread rumors about you. You've never done anything wrong to me, so why would I do anything to hurt you? Just relax."
Avni chimed in again, this time with her usual playful tone. "Isn't she beautiful, like a female lead character? And my brother? The perfect handsome male lead?"
Noor nodded, her eyes soft as they met mine. "She is beautiful."
I didn't know how to respond. The weight of their words, their attention, was overwhelming. I lowered my eyes, staring at the floor, hoping to hide the confusion and nerves boiling inside me.
Noor, sensing my discomfort, turned to Avni and asked, "Why you called us in your room?"
Avni shrugged, a playful grin forming on her lips. "Well, that airhead Tanya threw wine on bhabhi."
I whipped my head toward Avni, eyes wide. "Bhabhi?"
Avni smirked at my shock. "What year were you born?"
"1992," I answered, still confused.
Her smile grew wider. "Perfect! Two years younger than Bhaiya and one year older than me." She turned back to Noor, eager to continue her story. "As I was saying, that witch Tanya threw wine on Vanya didi, and her father disrespected her in front of everyone..."
For the next five minutes, Avni detailed the entire chaotic scene to Noor. I stood there, stunned by how fast she could speak, turning a two-minute incident into a five-minute-long monologue. But as I watched her, something inside me softened. Avni reminded me of Swati bhabhi-the way she was always so lively, always bringing energy into a room.
When Avni finally stopped to take a breath, Noor looked at her and asked, "Now what? And don't tell me you're planning to beat up Tanya's parents."
Avni's grin returned. "Well, that was Plan A. But now that you disapprove, we'll go for Plan B."
Noor and I exchanged confused glances before asking in unison, "What's Plan B?"
Avni's eyes sparkled with mischief. "We'll get you two dressed up and make your entrance at the party. But before you both protest, Noor -badi maa and choti maa are already looking for you. And Vanya didi," she pointed at me, "you can't leave since you don't have a spare uniform to get back into the party and you can't go to the trainee centre as it's been locked due to security reasons of party."
Noor and I looked at each other in disbelief, then back at Avni. Noor sighed, frustration clear on her face. "You've really thought this through, haven't you? Trapping both me and Vanya didi."
Avni just chuckled, her grin never fading. "Let's go. It's time to enter the closet room."
I stared at Noor in shock. "There's another room inside this room?"
Noor nodded, her face sorrowful. "Yes, there is."
