I wandered around Enzo’s villa in Italy, feeling lost in the spacious, beautifully furnished room that now felt empty without him. It had been three days since we returned from New York, and it felt like I hadn’t seen him at all. Since the moment we got back, Enzo had locked himself in his study, dealing with whatever aftermath followed the attack on us. I picked up my phone, needing to hear a familiar voice, and dialed Sophie.
She answered on the third ring, her voice bright and comforting. “Hey, Elena! How are you holding up?”
I leaned against the windowsill, staring at the picturesque view of the Italian countryside that seemed to mock the turmoil I felt inside. “I don’t know, Sophie. It’s been three days since we got back, and Enzo hasn’t left his study. After the attack, he didn’t even spare a second before dragging us straight back to Italy. Marco was already waiting when we arrived, and he asked if we were okay. Enzo told me to get into the room and not leave the house, like I’m some prisoner. He’s even heightened the security.”
“Elena, I know you’re worried,” Sophie said gently, her voice soft but firm. “But we have no idea what he must be dealing with. Maybe he's assuring you're safe .
I sighed, frustration bubbling inside me as I paced the room. “I know he is, but it’s so frustrating. We’re under the same roof, and I can’t even be near him. I miss him, Sophie. It’s like he’s right here, but not really.”
Sophie laughed, her tone playful and teasing. “Aww, my baby is missing her fiancé. How cute.”
“Shut up,” I grumbled, though I couldn’t help the small smile that tugged at my lips. “It’s just…ugh. And then there’s Aunt Maria. She’s furious.”
“Yeah, I know,” Sophie replied, her tone softening. “The moment the news went on air about Enzo Moritti proposing to you in front of the world, Aunt Maria called me. I had to tell her everything—how you moved in with him, the fake fiancé thing, all of it. She’s not upset that you’re engaged; she’s upset that you didn’t tell her what you were going through. The attack on your house, all the chaos. She feels left out.”
“I wanted to tell her, but I didn’t want to stress her out more than she already is. She’s done so much for me.” I paused, thinking of the call I’d made to Aunt Maria earlier. “I talked to her today. She didn’t want to speak to me at first, but then she did. And now she’s asking me to bring Enzo over for dinner. But he’s so busy, I don’t even know how to tell him.”
Sophie’s voice was filled with warmth and understanding. “Don’t worry about it too much, Elena. Let Enzo handle whatever he’s dealing with. Once things calm down, you can take him to Aunt Maria’s for dinner. Everything will be fine, I promise.”
I nodded, though Sophie couldn’t see me. I just hoped she was right.
After hanging up the call with Sophie, I made my way to the dining table, feeling the weight of the quiet villa around me. Dinner was already set, a beautifully plated meal that looked as lonely as I felt. Mrs. Smith, the housekeeper, hovered nearby, and I glanced up at her, hoping for some reassurance.
