Chaperones

I sat at the kitchen counter, eating cereal straight out of the box. Elena was upstairs getting ready for the school's 1950's dance. Because apparently Mystic Falls is never out of ideas for events. Aunt Jenna had tried to get me to chaperone along with her but I refused, feeling like it would be sad for me to show up to my old high school when I only just graduated.

A knock at the door dragged me out of my thoughts, and I reluctantly put my box of cereal on the counter and hopped off of the bar stool. I reluctantly walked over to the front door and opened it, and then immediately regretted it.

Charles Montgomery stood on the porch of our house, a light smile on his face. The sight of him caused a hurricane of emotions to attack my soul. I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive him for what he did to me. I know that I'll never be able to forget it, that's for sure.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him

"Would you believe me if I said that I missed you?" Charles questioned, tilting his head in an attempt to look innocent.

"Not exactly." I mused, wishing I could just slam the door on his face.

"Well, it's the truth. Ever since I saw you at the party, I've been unable to get you out of my head. Could I come in, so we can talk?" He asked. Red flags blared in my mind. He was waiting for me to invite him inside. I might just be hypervigilant and looking for vampires where there are none, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

"Talk about what? The time you choked me or the time you cheated on me?" I questioned with a quirk of my eyebrow. I saw his face fall at my words, clearly hoping that I would have somehow forgiven him and forgotten about it.

"Goodbye." I finally got the courage to slam the door in his face, letting out a shaky sigh of relief that was muddled with fear.

I heard Elena calling for me from up the stairs,
shaking me from my frozen state. I headed up the stairs and over to her door, leaning against the door frame with a curious gaze.

"What's up?" I asked her

"Nothing, just thought I heard something." She shrugged. I then noticed that her posture had grown tense. She ran over to her bed and picked up a very familiar looking item. Dads old watch, the vampire tracker.

I walked over to her to see that it was spinning rapidly, indicating that a vampire was nearby. Elena picked up her phone and dialed Stefan's number while I kept watch. A part of me wondered if it was Charles, but I kept my eyes open for any unwanted bloodsuckers who might have gotten in the house.

Elena then suddenly ran out of her room. I furrowed my brows and chased after her, not wanting her to be by herself. She raced down the stairs and I followed quickly behind.

"Elena." I called out, trying to get her to slow down.

"Where is he?" Elena suddenly asked

Elena then sighed heavily. "Oh, thank god. This compass was spinning. Stefan must be here. Thank you."

I glanced around the livingroom one last time as Elena hung up the phone. I could feel the presence of someone. There was a vampire nearby, and while I wanted to believe it was Stefan, this one felt way too close.

A man suddenly dropped from the ceiling right in front of me. I screamed and very quickly pushed Elena out of the way. My heart was beating rapidly as I faced down the unknown man. His fangs extended and he lashed forward, grabbing onto me and attempting to sink his fangs into my neck. It felt like I was frozen.

Stefan suddenly appeared out of nowhere and grabbed the man, throwing him away from me and knocking him over the living room couch. The force of Stefan knocked me over in the process, causing me to land harshly on my back. The vampire growled angrily and sped out of the house.
