The bright white lights of the hospital burned my eyes and the smell of antiseptics stinged at my nose. The hospital was an assault on the scenes at times, and it was never somewhere I enjoyed visiting. Especially after what had happened to my parents.
While we were at home, John had been attacked by someone. His fingers had been cut off, and as much as I don't like him, it wasn't something I wanted to see. On top of that, Matt, Caroline and Tyler had been in a car accident. And Caroline wasn't doing well. She was in the ICU.
Elena hugged Bonnie tightly while I stared at the floor, my nails digging into the palm of my hand as I tried to keep myself from tearing up for the poor girl.
"Is there something that you can do? A spell or something?" Elena asked Bonnie
"She doesn't know how. Do you?" Damon spoke up, alerting us to his presence. I glanced over at him, noting how he refused to meet my eyes.
"No, I don't." Bonnie said
"No, you don't. Because it took Emily years to learn a spell like that." Damon said
"Yeah, well, I can take down a vampire. That spell was easy to learn." Bonnie threatened. I clenched my jaw, still not over what Bonnie had done.
"I can give Caroline some blood." Damon said,
"No. No way." Elena shook her head
"Just enough to heal her. She'll be safe. It'll be out of her system. She'll be better." Damon said
"It's too risky. I can't agree to that." Elena argued
"Not doing it is too risky, El." I said
"Do it. This is Caroline. Okay? We can't let her die." Bonnie stated, startling everyone.
"If I do this, you and me, call a truce?" Damon asked
"No. But you'll do it anyway. For Thea." Bonnie said, her words brought the image of our almost kiss into my mind, and along with the memory was an avalanche of emotions. Bonnie then took that as her queue to walk off, not wanting to be around Damon for any longer than she had to be.
Aunt Jenna suddenly came rushing up to us. "Elena? I came as soon as I got your message. How's John?"
"Where have you been?" Elena asked her
"At the Fire Department. I had to fill out a report. I told you earlier. I-" Jenna tried to say
"No, you didn't." Elena argued, interrupting her
"Yes, I did." Jenna insisted
"No, Jenna, you didn't." Elena said
"Yes, I did." Jenna said again with certainty.
"Oh no. Mmm. You gotta be kidding me." Damon suddenly groaned
"What is it?" I asked him. He looked at Jenna and Elena, and then grabbed my arm and began to pull me away. Jenna and Elena sent us both a confused look, and both of their gazes lingered on his hand that clutched my arm. I allowed him to lead me through the hospital before he stopped somewhere quiet.
"Look, when Elena came home, I didn't really think that anything was wrong. But, what stuck out to me was that she wouldn't let you touch her. And now she doesn't even remember talking to Jenna." Damon gestured wildly with his hands
"Yeah..." I nodded, the pieces slowly clicking into place.
"Who do we know who could pretend to be Elena?" Damon asked me
"Katherine." I stated.
"Exactly." Damon nodded
"Oh shit." I said, my eyes wide.
