I sighed as I tugged on the hem of my dress. I really don't want to be going to this founder's event, but at least I'll look pretty doing it. Besides, my mom loved this stuff, it was important to her. I'll be damned if I let my dislike of social events stop me from going.
The sun was slowly going down over the horizon as I walked up to join the large queue of people waiting to get into the Lockwood estate. No matter how many times I came here, I was always surprised by the size of the place. I couldn't imagine living in a house so big.
A hand tapped my shoulder, causing me to spin around. My eyes landed on the face of my ex, Charles, who I haven't seen since high school graduation. I couldn't help but feel startled by his presence, my heart rate increasing merely at the sight of him. My fingers twisted into the fabric of my dress, trying to ease my anxiety.
"Charles. What are you doing here?" I asked, trying desperately to keep my voice steady and devoid of any emotion.
"I decided to take a gap year from college." He said
"After one week? Was it really that bad?" I mused, a slight lilt of amusement in my voice.
"No, no it wasn't that. I just realized I wanted to live a little first." Charles said with a shrug of his shoulders
"So you came back to Mystic Falls?" I questioned
"Well, I thought I'd see some familiar faces before I take off." Charles shrugged. His hand moved to my arm, his finger trailing down my exposed skin in a way that made my skin crawl. I shifted away from him slightly, trying to put some space between us. There was a look in his eyes that filled me with nausea. I felt desperate to escape from the situation.
Before he could say or do anything else, a hand wrapped around my arm, causing me to jump ever so slightly. I glanced up to see Damon Salvatore. His sharp jaw was even more defined as he clenched it tightly.
"Hi, Damon Salvatore, and you are?" Damon questioned, tilting his head in faux curiosity.
"Charles Montgomery." He replied, a tight lipped smile forming on his face as he looked at the man who was a few inches taller than he was, and staring him down with a look that could kill.
"Well, it was good to see you, Thea. I hope I'll see you again soon." He gave me a coy smile, purposefully ignoring Damon as he turned on his heels and walked back to his family who he had arrived with.
"Who was that douchebag?" Damon questioned with a light scoff
"My ex." I mused with a huff, hating the fact that he was back in town.
"You dated that? C'mon, Thea. You could do so much better." Damon tutted with a shake of his head as he led me up to the front door of the house that was already filled to the brim with people. I was honestly curious to see if he would easily step inside, or if he would wait to be invited in once again.
"Althea. It's so nice to see you. It's been too long." Carol Lockwood shook her head with a bright smile. You're right, Carol, I have been moping in self deprecation because of my parents death for far too long. I should be attending more social gatherings.
"It's good to see you too, this is my..."
I trailed off, looking up at the man who still had his arm linked in my own. "My date. Damon Salvatore." I said. Why did I say date?
"Salvatore? As in one of the founding families?" Carol Lockwood asked curiously with a bright smile
"Uh, we're distantly related, yes." Damon nodded with a charming smile.
"Well, come in, please. Enjoy yourselves." Carol smiled politely, and Damon stepped over the threshold of the house. He's either very polite, or secretly a vampire. And honestly, a vampire seems more likely when it comes to Damon Salvatore.
