"you know what i've been"
Jiwon let out a deep sigh as she struggled to focus on her assignments, the scribbled notes and diagrams blurring together on the page. Seated at the window in the hospital's staff room, she had hoped the calm atmosphere would help her concentrate. Instead, her mind stubbornly refused to cooperate, drifting relentlessly back to one person - Eunseok.
The soft sunlight streaming through the window highlighted the faint creases on her forehead, etched by worry and fatigue. Her pencil moved mechanically, jotting down notes without registering their meaning.
Why couldn't she shake off the feeling that their paths would cross again? Their last encounter had left her reeling, a mix of emotions swirling inside her like a vortex. She recalled the way Eunseok's eyes had locked onto hers.
Jiwon cursed her own weakness, frustrated that her thoughts still lingered on Eunseok. She shouldn't waste another moment on someone who had made it clear he didn't want her. With a heavy sigh, she gathered her belongings and made her way to the hospital's café, seeking a distraction from the relentless cycle of memories.
Glancing at her watch, she noted the time - 10:11 PM. The late hour explained why the corridors were deserted, the only sound the soft hum of fluorescent lights. Her friends were all busy with their medical shifts.
As she entered the café, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee enveloped her, offering a fleeting sense of comfort. Jiwon ordered a black coffee and settled into a quiet corner, hoping the bitter taste would clear her mind.
The café was almost empty, except for a few exhausted-looking residents typing away on their laptops. Jiwon recognized the look - the same blend of fatigue and determination that had driven her through her own medical training.
She sipped her coffee, letting the warmth spread through her chilled fingers. For a moment, she allowed herself to forget Eunseok, focusing instead on the weariness that seeped into her bones.
But as she gazed out the window, her thoughts began to drift once more. Why did she still care?
"Tired?" Chenle asked, his warm smile illuminating the dimly lit café as he settled into the chair beside Jiwon. His eyes crinkled at the corners, filled with genuine concern.
Jiwon's initial surprise gave way to a weak smile. "Just a long day," she replied, understating the emotional turmoil that had been brewing inside her.
Chenle nodded sympathetically, his gaze never leaving hers. "You've been pushing yourself too hard, Jiwon. When was the last time you took a break?" His voice was soft, gentle, a soothing balm to her frazzled nerves.
Jiwon shrugged, avoiding eye contact. She couldn't admit the truth - that her exhaustion stemmed from thoughts of Eunseok, not just her demanding schedule. Chenle's presence, however, offered a welcome respite from her turbulent emotions.
As they sat together in comfortable silence, Jiwon began to relax, letting Chenle's calm demeanor seep into her pores. For the first time that evening, she felt her guard drop, her defenses weakening.
"Is it about Song Eunseok?" Chenle's voice was low and thoughtful, his eyes locked onto Jiwon's.
Jiwon's gaze faltered, her cheeks warming as she nodded almost imperceptibly. "Hmm." The noncommittal sound betrayed her, but she couldn't bring herself to deny it.
Chenle's expression softened, understanding etched on his features. "You two have history, don't you?" His tone invited confidences, reassuring Jiwon that her secrets were safe.
Jiwon's shoulders sagged, the weight of her emotions pressing down on her. She longed to unburden herself, to share the tangled web of feelings that had ensnared her.
"He left me when I needed him the most," Jiwon whispered, the words barely audible over the quiet hum of the café's machinery, her voice cracked.
Eunseok strode into the café, his throbbing headache intensifying with each step. He ordered a bitter coffee, his voice low and rough, and covered his forehead with his hoodie. The barista's sympathetic smile only exacerbated his irritability.
As he turned to collect his coffee, his gaze swept the room, halting abruptly on Jiwon and Chenle. They sat together, their heads bent in intimate conversation. Eunseok's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched.
For a fleeting moment, he locked eyes with Jiwon, his glare harsh and unforgiving. The connection sparked like a live wire, and Eunseok felt his chest constrict. He turned away abruptly, the plastic cup creaking in his clenched fist.
"Such a dickhead," Chenle muttered, his glare burning a hole in Eunseok's retreating form. Jiwon sighed, her eyes closing as she massaged her scalp, trying to ward off the looming headache.
"I just want to live in peace," she whispered, the longing in her voice palpable. Chenle's expression softened, his concern for Jiwon evident.
"You deserve that, Jiji" he said, his tone firm. "Someone like him doesn't deserve your tears." Chenle's words stirred a mix of emotions within Jiwon.
Gratitude toward Chenle for his unwavering support wrestled with lingering feelings for Eunseok. She opened her eyes, meeting Chenle's empathetic gaze.
"Thanks, Chenle," Jiwon said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Just being around you makes me feel better." Chenle smiled warmly.
