Sleep, sleep, sleep

Jiwon sighed, frustration etched on her face. She tossed onto her side, her gaze drifting toward Beomgyu's peaceful form. His soft snores filled the room, a stark contrast to her restless state.

Four hours had ticked by, yet sleep eluded her. Jiwon checked her phone, the screen glowing in the darkness. 3:07 AM. She groaned, her exhaustion palpable.

"Mental prayers for tomorrow, please"
she whispered, seeking solace in silent entreaty. Minutes ticked by, and Jiwon knew she wouldn't drift off. With a resigned sigh, she swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up.

Warm milk always helps when you can't sleep

Jiwon's mind echoed with her mother's soothing words. Desperate for a restful night, she set out to find the hotel's kitchen.

The two-story building's layout was confusing, with only two rooms per floor, but scattered external rooms and spaces. After a four-minute search, Jiwon finally found the kitchen on the first floor.

As she entered, she was greeted by the tranquil view of the open garden through the large windows. The snowy covered greenery and serene atmosphere calmed her restless mind.

Jiwon warmed the milk, its soothing aroma filling the kitchen. She took a sip, feeling the warmth spread through her. Suddenly, she sensed someone approaching from the upper floor. Her instincts heightened, expecting an unwelcome encounter.

But when Eunseok entered the kitchen, her tension eased slightly - not because she was glad to see him, but because the unknown presence was now identified. "What..." Eunseok trailed off, his surprise at seeing Jiwon evident. His eyes narrowed, displeasure etched on his face.

Jiwon met his gaze, her expression equally cold. She hadn't expected a friendly encounter, and Eunseok's reaction confirmed it. The animosity between them was palpable, a heavy weight that filled the space.

Eunseok's eyes lingered, his jaw clenched. "Why are you still up?" he asked gruffly, breaking the silence.

Jiwon shrugged, her indifference feigned. "Couldn't sleep" She didn't elaborate, and Eunseok didn't press.

"Why are you awake so late?" Jiwon's gaze lingered on Eunseok, her question hanging in the air.

Eunseok's eyes flashed with irritation, his jaw clenched in response. "None of your business" he retorted, his tone biting. The hostility between them was nothing new, yet Jiwon sensed a deeper unease beneath his rough exterior. Perhaps it was the lateness of the hour or the solitude of the kitchen, but his usual defenses seemed slightly breached.

Jiwon raised an eyebrow, her expression a mask of indifference.

"Just making conversation" she said, her voice even. Eunseok's glare intensified, but he remained silent, his presence filling the space between them. The air was heavy with unspoken words, their mutual dislike palpable.

Jiwon sighed, pouring another glass of milk. She added a sprinkle of turmeric, the yellow hue contrasting with the creamy white. Eunseok watched, his brows furrowed in confusion. "What are you doing?" he asked.

"Warm milk always helps with sleep" Jiwon replied, her voice neutral. "Mom's remedy." She hesitated, offering him the glass. Their mutual dislike made her expect rejection or worse.

Instead, Eunseok nodded curtly and took the glass. Their fingers touched briefly, sending a spark of tension through the air. Jiwon withdrew her hand, masking her surprise.

Eunseok's gaze lingered on the glass, his expression softening. For a fleeting moment, Jiwon saw a glimmer of the person he once was, before their relationship soured.

She leaned against the kitchen counter, her weary figure reflected in the windowpane. Outside, snowflakes danced amidst the greenery, illuminating the mountainous landscape even in darkness. Her gaze drifted to Eunseok, who stood nearby, sipping the warm milk.

His eyes, too, were fixed on the winter wonderland. For a moment, they shared a silent appreciation for the serene scene.

"You should sleep" Eunseok said, breaking the silence. His gaze shifted to Jiwon's.

"Just a few more minutes," Jiwon replied. "The scenery is breathtaking." Her voice barely rose above a whisper. Eunseok nodded, understanding etched on his face. For an instant, their mutual animosity receded.

Time stood still, and Jiwon felt transported to a bygone era - a time when Eunseok's presence brought solace. His silent companionship soothed her frazzled soul, a balm she couldn't admit she needed. Despite her fierce denials, Jiwon missed him - terribly. The realization unsettled her, but she couldn't tear her gaze from Eunseok's tranquil profile.

As snowflakes continued their gentle dance outside, Jiwon allowed herself a moment's vulnerability. The world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them, suspended in a timeless bubble. Eunseok's eyes remained fixed on the winter landscape, his expression serene. Jiwon's heart swelled with emotions she dared not acknowledge.

The silence between them was no longer oppressive, but a comforting blanket that wrapped around her weary soul. Jiwon felt her defenses weakening, her guard dropping ever so slightly. For this brief moment, she let herself forget their bitter past and the animosity that had driven them apart.

"I wish you didn't do that," Jiwon said, her voice barely above a whisper. Her words hung in the air like a challenge, but Eunseok saw the vulnerability behind them. "I thought I was important enough for you to stay with me." The sentence trailed off, a painful admission.

Eunseok stood frozen, his back to her. Jiwon's words struck a chord, and for a moment, he forgot to breathe. He felt the weight of his past actions bearing down on him.

As Jiwon turned to leave, her footsteps echoed through the silence. Eunseok remained still, his eyes fixed on the spot where she vanished. The snow outside continued its gentle fall, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing within him.
