its been a week since ive been working as her assistant. things have been off between us since i left her house and went back to the shelter, but i put all of that aside and thought about laila. i took this job so i could provide for her.

shes going off to school next year, and im excited because she's gonna be around kids her age like never before. she does have separation anxiety, so if she doesnt see me at all, she'll go quiet and stay to herself. thats something were gonna have to work on before she leaves for school.

"you have an interview on the wendy show tomorrow at ten am and more bookings. i printed the locations and events out for you– here you go."

"thanks" she said, never looking up at me. i paid it no mind.

"you're welcome." i said and turned to walk out when she said something that stopped me in my tracks.

"are you guys coming back?"

i paused and turned back to her, "no"

"why not? why do you wanna be there?"

"i just wanna do my job and take care of my daughter. i appreciate you for letting us stay, but im comfortable where i am."

"you probably are, but is your daughter comfortable where she is?"

"shes comfortable anywhere i am. so, yes, she is. why are we discussing this again?"

"i just dont understand why you up and left like that. you could've left a note or something. i was worried sick."

"worried sick? you barely even know us fantasia."

"well, with the amount of time we've spent together, its like ive known you both for years. that little girl means a lot to me no matter how long ive known her."

"is that so? what's my baby's name?"

"i don–"

"can you tell me the condition she has? you know the one that i told you the day before i left."

"she...i dont–"

"when is her birthday? she actually told you this yesterday."

she looked defeated, "her birthday was the day after i got fired. may fourteenth, actually. the day i was supposed to get paid and buy her those shoes she always wanted, but no, you came and ruined that for her over a simple fucking mistake. so im sorry if i dont wanna continue living with the woman who put us back at step one– you know what, my job here is done. i quit."

"taraji, wa–" i left without saying another word. to even think about everything that has happened because of her is pissing me off.

i went to find laila, she was sound asleep and tab was sitting next to her. i began packing her things.

"everything okay?"

"no." i was aggressively throwing things inside of the bag when i felt someone grab my arm.

"taraji, calm down, please." i heard fantasia say from behind me, "can we just talk like adults?"

"talk like adults? cute." i chuckled sarcastically.

"can someone tell me what's going on?"

fantasia let go of my arm and stood in my face, "will you talk to me, please? one hour, just one."

shes lucky im not this evil ass stuck up person like her, "fine, but after that, i no longer wanna communicate with you ever again."

she looked down and back at me, "i understand."
