ʜᴀᴘᴘʏ ɪɴᴅᴇᴘᴇɴᴅᴇɴᴄᴇ ᴅᴀʏ!

the house was pretty busy today. taraji was setting the grill up while laila, tab, and i were inside decorating and making the inside foods. my guys went shopping for everything we had on the list the day before.

"now that the table cloths and all of that is set, we can start putting the finger foods down."

laila and i customized the treats, so they were the theme of the american flag. they were so cute i didn't want them to be eaten.

"what time is it tab?"

"uh..." she ran to get her phone, "three forty-five"

"alright, everyone should be here in a few minutes. im gonna see what raji is doing, be right back."

she was bopping to the music as she flipped the food.

"they not like us!" she sang. her and this song. i wrapped my arms around her from behind, "you scared me. hey, pretty lady."

"hey baby. everyone will be here in less than an hour."

"okay, i have a few dogs left, and then everything will be done. are yall done with the inside foods?"

"yes, all laid out. we're just waiting on you"

"see, when you are good at what you do, it will take time. give me a minute."

"oh, please." i playfully pushed her. she closed the grill and turned to me.

"hey." she smiled and kissed me, "im sweaty."

"you are, but it's okay. let me finish the meat, and you can go get changed."

"you tryna call me stank?"

"what? no baby, i just feel bad you've been out here since eleven."

"well, i do have to meet with tour guy." i rolled my eyes a little. i was so ready to finally meet this person, "why did i just witness an eye roll. what's up?"

"nothing, im just dying to see who this guy is. he seems to be really important to you."

"he's not important to me, but he is a great guy."

"great enough to know about our child's traumatic experience before me?" i still wasnt over that even though i forgave  her.

"did you forgive me just to throw it back in my face? i overshared, and im sorry for the millionth time. matter of fact, his invite is canceled. i won't see or speak of him ever again. can we move on now?"

"hey, i didnt mean t–"

"it's fine, beauty. just give me a minute. okay? ill be back."

"okay." she kissed my forehead and went inside the house. maybe i do need to just hush sometimes, but i have a right to my feelings.

everything was done, and prepared to be eaten. my mom and brother came first. we were now waiting on a few of my aunts, uncles, friends, and cousins to arrive. taraji has been a little distant since earlier, but she speaks from time to time, or whenever i need her, she's there with no questions asked.

"tasia, come here, baby."

"hey, mommy. what's up?"

"who made this here potato salad?"

"i did. is it bad?"

"no, not at all. it's actually the best i've ever had. better than my own, actually."
