We start back school today and I know it's going to be horrible. Isabelle and Julian have both been texting me and I've been answering, but I don't really want to be caught in the middle of them and Miles.Me and Dad haven't really talked about the day at the hospital. We've really just been pretending it didn't happen. I said things I shouldn't have and I apologized, but he just shrugged it off. I decided then to just leave it alone.
Dahlia is doing much better and Miles and her have been staying with Hen and Karen. They stepped up and said they could foster them until they found a permanent home. I couldn't be more thankful for them.
If it wasn't for them, Miles and Dahlia would be across the country with some stuck up family friend of theirs.
"Lydia, Miles is here." Dad says from the doorway of my room. "Okay." I say, picking up my backpack and slinging it over my shoulder. "Have a good day, alright?" Dad says. "I will. Love you." I say. "Love you too." Dad says with a small smile as I walk past him and out the door.
I get into Miles' car and look over at him. He looks tired. "Hey." He says. "Hey." I say, putting my backpack in the floorboard. "Are you ready?" He asks.
"As ready as I'll ever be." I say with a soft laugh as he pulls out of the driveway.

As we walk into the school, I see Isabelle and Julian standing near my locker. "You've got to be kidding me." Miles whispers as we walk up to them. "Hey." Isabelle says.
"Hi?" I say. "You haven't been answering our texts, Miles." Julian says. "That usually means the person doesn't want to talk to you, but here we are." Miles says. "Dude, come on. You were in the wrong.. why is that so hard for you to admit?" Julian asks.
Miles just rolls his eyes before walking away. "What's up with your boyfriend, Lyds?" Isabelle asks. "I don't know." I say, opening my locker and putting my stuff inside.
"How are you doing?" Julian asks. "I'm okay. You?" I ask. "I'm good. We'll see you later, yeah?" Julian asks. "Yeah. Sure." I say before they both walk away.
This is going to be a long day.

Lunch comes around and I walk into the cafeteria. Miles is in the corner by himself and he waves me over. I walk over and take a seat. "Hey." He says. "Hi." I say.
"How is your first day so far?" Miles asks, looking around the cafeteria. "It was alright.. my Spanish teacher is going to make me pull my hair out." I say jokingly.
"Why? Didn't you grow up around the Spanish language?" Miles asks. "Yes. I did. But she's pronouncing it wrong.. she's saying it in English without any accent or anything! It's quite annoying." I say.
"I tried correcting her but she told me I was talking back so, I'm just going to let her do her thing. I'll do mine." I say. Miles laughs. "Maybe try to stay on her good side.." Miles says.
"I'll try." I say with a small laugh as we both start eating our food.

When I walk into my last period class, I see someone I never thought I'd see again. Nathaniel. He looks up and sees me, his mouth drops.
"Lydia, you'll be seated next to Nathaniel. Nathaniel, raise your hand." The teacher says. He raises his hand and I slowly walk over before taking a seat.
"I never thought I'd see you again." I say with a small laugh. "Same here." He says. "Not that I thought you were going to die or something. It's just after a meeting like that, you almost never see them again." He adds quickly.
"I get what you mean." I say, shrugging my shoulders. "How are you doing?" He asks. "I'm good. Other than the nightmares.." I say. "Yeah.. I have them too." He says. "How are you doing?" I ask.
"I'm fine. I wasn't really severely injured, but it did still leave a mental scar, you know?" He says. "Yeah. I do." I say with a small smile. "So.. since when did you go here?" He asks, leaning back in his chair.
"I went here last school year, but my first day of school was kind of ruined by the earthquake." I say with a soft laugh. "I heard. I wasn't here that day though." He says.
The teacher starts talking and me and him don't talk to each other for the rest of the period. It's like we're both just ignoring the fact that he saved my life. I always wondered if I had the chance, what would I say to him? And now that I have the chance, I don't know what to say. Thank you is probably a good start.
But a small thank you isn't enough for what he did.
