I open our front door and Isabelle, Miles, and Julian are standing there. "Hey!" I say. They came so we can work on schoolwork together. It's also the first time they've been here since Mom came back.
It's been a few days since Christmas and everything is going okay. Christmas was amazing, but it just feels like something is wrong. I don't know how to explain it.
"So, what are we working on first?" Miles asks as we take a seat at the table. "Science I guess." I say. Miles nods before taking on his laptop.
*********
"This makes no sense!" Julian says. "What doesn't?" I ask. "92 x 4y = 1,104" Julian says. "How do you get 1,104 from multiplying 92 and 4??" Julian asks. "Oh my god.." Miles says with a laugh. "You have to find the value of y." I say. "And how do I find the value of a letter?!" Julian asks.
"Multiply 92-" I start to say but Mom walks into the room. "Oh. I didn't know you had company over." Mom says. "I told you last night, Mom." I say. Miles and Isabelle's eyes widen. "Do you know where your dad keeps the measuring cups?" Mom asks with a sign. "That cabinet, I think." I say, pointing at a specific cabinet.
Mom nods, opening said cabinet. "Aha." Mom says, grabbing a measuring cup. "Thanks." Mom says before walking back to their bedroom. "Why does she need a measuring cup in her bedroom?" Julian asks.
"Who knows?" I ask. "And why did you not tell us she was back?!" Isabelle asks. "I didn't think it was important." I say. "You didn't think it was important to mention your absent mom is now present?" Miles asks.
"I didn't see the point. You guys would've ran into her someday anyway." I say, shrugging my shoulders. "She seems nice." Isabelle says, shrugging her shoulders. "She didn't even speak to you, Isabelle." Miles says. "Ok, and?" Isabelle says. Miles rolls his eyes.
"Look, I'm sorry, but can someone please help me with this question?!" Julian asks, making us all laugh and start helping him.
*******
"Bye!" I say as Isabelle, Miles, and Julian get into their car. They wave back and then I shut the door. We didn't get much work done, but we got most of it done.
"They seem like nice kids." Mom says as she walks into the room. "They are." I say with a small smile. "Are you heading to bed?" Mom asks. I nod. "Okay. Goodnight. Love you." Mom says. "Love you too." I say as I head to my room.
