Chapter 14: The Run That Ended Too Soon

Rena's POV

The mall was bustling with life-families, couples, and groups of friends wandering through the bright stores. It almost felt normal. Almost. Filip walked beside me, keeping close, his hand brushing against mine every so often as a reminder that, even here, I wasn't truly free.

"I thought you could use some fresh air, maybe a little shopping," Filip said, his voice smooth but tinged with that possessive edge I had come to fear. "Pick anything you like."

I nodded, feigning interest in a nearby display of shoes. My mind, though, was elsewhere, racing with the thought of escape. This was my chance. The mall was crowded, full of people. If I could just get far enough away, maybe I could disappear before he realized I was gone.

Filip's attention drifted momentarily as he checked his phone. I seized the opportunity. My heart pounded in my chest as I slipped into the crowd, weaving through shoppers as quickly and quietly as I could. My breath came in short bursts, adrenaline pumping through my veins.

I didn't look back.

I darted past a clothing store, my eyes scanning for an exit. I could see the doors now, sunlight pouring in from outside. Just a few more steps. Freedom was so close, I could taste it.

But before I could make it, a firm hand grabbed my arm, yanking me back with such force that I nearly stumbled. My heart sank.

"Rena!" Filip's voice was cold and sharp as he pulled me back toward him. His grip tightened, his eyes burning with anger and something darker-hurt. "What were you thinking?"

"I... I..." I stammered, my voice trembling. I could feel the eyes of strangers on us, but no one intervened. They couldn't see what was really happening.

"You can't run from me," he hissed, pulling me close, his voice low and controlled. "You belong with me, Rena. Don't you see that?"

Tears welled up in my eyes as I looked up at him, helpless and trapped. "This isn't love, Filip. You can't keep me like this."

His gaze softened slightly, but his grip remained firm. "I love you, Rena. That's why I can't let you go. Not ever."

With that, he led me back through the mall, the illusion of freedom shattered.
