Chapter 40: A Tense Reunion
Rena's POV
It was just a regular day. Fil and I were taking our usual walk through the park, the crisp air filling my lungs as I watched him run ahead, his laughter filling the air. My heart swelled with pride every time I saw him-my son, my reason for everything.
Then, I saw him.
Filip.
Time seemed to stop. I hadn't seen him in ten years, but I would recognize him anywhere. My heart dropped into my stomach as he stood there, staring at Fil, his expression a mixture of shock and something else-guilt, maybe? My anger, long buried under the need to move on, surged to the surface. He didn't get to just appear like this, after all this time, after everything.
I stopped in my tracks, my body rigid with tension. Fil noticed the shift in me and stopped, confused. "Mom? What's wrong?"
Before I could respond, Filip began walking toward us. Every step he took made my pulse race with anger. He didn't have the right to be here. He didn't have the right to look at our son like that, with longing in his eyes.
"Rena," he said, his voice low, filled with regret.
The sound of his voice was enough to break the dam inside me. "Don't." My voice was sharp, colder than I meant it to be, but I didn't care. He deserved worse. "You don't get to say my name. Not after what you did."
Fil looked between us, confused, his innocent eyes not yet understanding the weight of what was happening. "Mom, who is this man?"
I swallowed hard, trying to keep my emotions in check. How was I supposed to explain to my son that this was the man who had walked out on us before he was even born? The man who left me alone to raise him?
Filip's eyes softened as he looked at Fil, and for a moment, I saw the regret and guilt etched in his expression. But it wasn't enough to erase the hurt he had caused.
"Fil... I'm your father," Filip said, his voice shaking slightly.
Fil's eyes widened, darting between me and Filip. "My dad?" His voice was small, full of disbelief.
I knelt down beside him, wrapping my arms around him protectively. "Yes, Fil. This is your father," I said quietly, my heart breaking all over again as I spoke the words aloud.
Filip took a step closer, his eyes pleading with me. "Rena, please, I know I messed up. But I'm here now. I want to make things right."
I stood up, my hands clenched into fists. "You think you can just show up after ten years and make things right? Do you have any idea what we've been through? I raised him alone. You left us. You don't get to walk back into our lives like nothing happened."
"I know," he whispered, his voice full of regret. "But I'm not leaving again. I want to be part of his life."
I shook my head, the anger still burning inside me. "You don't deserve to know him. You don't deserve us."
Filip's eyes filled with pain, but I didn't let it soften me. I had spent too many years building a life for me and Fil, a life without him, and I wasn't going to let him destroy it with empty promises.
But as I looked down at Fil, standing there, confused and innocent, I knew I had to think of him first. No matter how much Filip had hurt me, this wasn't just about us anymore. It was about Fil, and he deserved to know the truth.
I turned back to Filip, my voice firm. "You want to be part of his life? Then prove it. But this is on my terms. You don't get to hurt him the way you hurt me."
Filip nodded, his eyes filled with a mixture of hope and guilt. "I will, Rena. I'll prove it."
I wasn't ready to believe him. Not yet. But for Fil's sake, I was willing to let him try.
And maybe, just maybe, I'd find a way to forgive him. Someday.
