Chapter 27: The Unexpected Surprise
Rena's POV
Days had passed since the argument with Filip about visiting my family. I tried to stay patient, but the longing to see my parents was growing stronger every day. I felt trapped in a world where every decision was made for me. I loved Filip, but his protectiveness was starting to feel like a cage.
That morning, I had resigned myself to another day without seeing my family. Filip had been working constantly, dealing with the business emergency, and I barely saw him anymore. But as I stood by the window, lost in my thoughts, I heard his footsteps behind me.
“Rena,” he called softly, his voice carrying a gentleness that caught me off guard.
I turned to see him standing there, a faint smile playing on his lips. He looked different, more relaxed, as if a burden had been lifted. “What’s going on?” I asked cautiously, unsure of his sudden change in mood.
He walked over to me, taking my hands in his. “I’ve been thinking a lot about what you said. About seeing your family.”
My heart skipped a beat. Was he really going to let me go? “Filip, I—”
Before I could say anything more, he squeezed my hands gently. “I’ve handled the business problem. Everything’s taken care of. And now… I want to surprise you.”
I blinked, not sure if I had heard him right. “Surprise me?”
He smiled, pulling out a small envelope from his pocket and handing it to me. “Open it.”
With shaky fingers, I tore open the envelope. Inside were two plane tickets. My eyes widened as I saw the destination—my hometown. I looked up at him, unable to believe what I was seeing. “Filip… are we…?”
“Yes,” he said, his voice soft but firm. “I’m taking you to see your family. We’re leaving today.”
A rush of emotions hit me all at once—relief, excitement, and a sense of gratitude so deep I could hardly speak. Tears welled up in my eyes as I threw my arms around him. “Thank you,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Thank you so much.”
Filip held me close, his hands running gently up and down my back. “I know I’ve been overprotective,” he admitted. “But I never want you to feel like I’m keeping you from what’s important to you. I want to make things right.”
I pulled back slightly to look at him, my heart swelling with emotion. In that moment, he didn’t feel like the controlling figure who made all the decisions—he felt like the man I fell in love with, the one who wanted to make me happy.
“Come on,” he said, wiping away one of my tears with his thumb. “Go get ready. We’ll leave as soon as you’re packed.”
---
The flight to my hometown felt surreal. Filip held my hand the entire time, and for once, I didn’t feel suffocated by his possessiveness. It was as if he had finally understood that I needed my own space, that I needed my family.
As we landed and made our way to my parents’ house, my heart raced with anticipation. It had been so long since I had seen them, and the thought of finally being able to hug them again brought a smile to my face.
When we pulled up to their house, I could already see my mother standing at the door, her face lighting up the moment she spotted me. Without hesitation, I rushed out of the car and ran into her arms, tears streaming down my cheeks.
“My baby,” she whispered, holding me tight. “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, Mom,” I choked out, my emotions overwhelming me.
My father soon joined us, pulling me into a tight embrace, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt whole. Being with my family again made everything else melt away.
As I turned to look at Filip, standing by the car with a small, satisfied smile on his face, I realized that this was his way of showing me that he understood. That despite everything, he cared enough to give me this moment with the people I loved.
Filip walked over, and my parents greeted him warmly, thankful for bringing me back to them. As we all sat together, sharing stories and laughter, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace. For now, things were right.
Filip had given me this gift, and for the first time in a long while, I felt like maybe, just maybe, we could find a balance between love and freedom.
