Chapter 26: The Broken Promise

Rena's POV

The morning after everything that had happened felt strangely normal, as if the nightmare with Jason hadn't taken place. The sun filtered through the curtains, casting a warm glow over the room. I rolled over, expecting to see Filip beside me, but his side of the bed was empty.

I found him downstairs in his office, already buried in work, his phone pressed to his ear. Papers were scattered across his desk, and he looked deep in thought, his brow furrowed. He glanced up when he saw me, offering a brief smile before turning his attention back to the call.

My heart sank a little. Today was supposed to be about us-our honeymoon, the start of our life together after everything we had been through. But instead, it looked like work had taken priority once again.

After what felt like forever, Filip finally hung up, rubbing his temples. "I'm sorry, Rena," he said, looking at me with genuine regret. "There's an emergency with the business. I need to handle this."

I nodded, though disappointment bubbled inside me. "I understand," I said softly, trying to mask the hurt in my voice.

Filip stood and walked over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist. "I'll make it up to you. Once this is all settled, we'll have the perfect honeymoon, I promise."

But I couldn't let go of the other thing weighing on my heart. Ever since we got married, I had wanted to visit my parents, to show them I was okay, to let them know I was safe. "Filip," I began hesitantly, "while you handle the business, can I visit my parents? I haven't seen them in so long, and I just... I miss them."

Filip's expression shifted, his arms stiffening around me. "Not now, Rena. It's too risky."

"Too risky?" I repeated, frowning. "I'll just go for a short visit. I won't be gone long."

He pulled away slightly, his eyes darkening with that familiar possessiveness. "I said no, Rena. It's not the right time. I need to know you're safe, and I can't keep an eye on you while dealing with this business issue."

His words stung, the possessiveness in his voice reminding me of all the times he had denied me things "for my own good." I clenched my fists at my sides, trying to stay calm. "Filip, I'm not a prisoner. I just want to see my family."

His eyes softened for a moment, but his tone remained firm. "I'm doing this to protect you, Rena. You saw what happened with Jason. I can't take any chances, not now. I'll let you visit them soon, but for now, I need you to trust me."

I bit my lip, feeling a surge of frustration and helplessness. Every time I asked for something, it seemed like there was always an excuse, always a reason to keep me close. "Fine," I said quietly, turning away from him. "But I'm not happy about it."

"I'll make this right, Rena," Filip said, his voice softer now. "Just give me time."

But as I walked back upstairs, the weight of his possessiveness pressed down on me, leaving me to wonder if there would ever be a time when I could truly make my own decisions.
