I turn my cheer music up
And I'm puffing my chest
I'm getting red in the face
You can call me obsessed
It's not your fault that they hover
I mean no disrespect
It's my right to be hellish
I still get jealous

“Awww, my Ruby baby, Mama missed you!” Lili exclaimed as soon as she got home from university, scooping up the cat in her arms. I rolled my eyes, feeling a surge of irritation.

I really wanted to throw this cat out, but Lili was so attached to it that I knew she would get sad and cry if I did. So, I had to keep my mouth shut, even though it felt like this little creature was stealing her attention from me.

“Lili, water,” I said, trying to get her to remember the simple things. Ever since this cat arrived, I had to ask for everything. I knew I could get water myself, but it frustrated me that she seemed to forget about me in the process.

“Here,” she said, handing me a glass. I took a sip, feeling a mix of relief and annoyance.

“Listen, let’s go out for dinner,” I suggested, hoping to carve out some time for just the two of us.

“Where?” she asked, her eyes lighting up.

“That Italian restaurant we went to last time,” I replied, picturing the cozy atmosphere and delicious food.

“No, we can’t go there,” she said, and my heart sank.

“Why?” I asked, feeling my frustration mount.

“Because cats aren’t allowed, na?” she answered, looking at me as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “Lili, we can’t let Ruby dictate our lives. We used to have fun going out together. Can’t you just leave her for a couple of hours?”

She frowned, glancing down at Ruby, who was now purring contentedly in her arms. “I don’t want to leave her alone. What if she gets scared?”

“Seriously?” I said, exasperated. “You’ve got to be kidding me. It’s just a cat!”

“But she needs us!” Lili insisted, her voice softening.

“Lili, I need you too!” I shot back, the desperation creeping into my tone.

She paused, looking at me with those big eyes that always melted my heart. “I know, I just… I want to take care of her.”
