The battle against Pitch had left a lingering chill in the air, but for the Guardians, the night had ended in victory. Jack Frost had finally accepted his role as a Guardian, choosing to join them in their mission to protect the children of the world.
Y/N, the Spirit of Halloween, stood in the aftermath, his shadow cloak still rustling softly with the fading energy of the night. As the others continued their conversations, Y/N slipped away with Toothiana. They didn't need to say much—after centuries together, they understood each other's rhythms.
Tonight, they returned to La Sombra, Y/N's hideaway nestled deep within the misty forests of Colombia. This quaint sanctuary was veiled by magic, where the shadows danced and flickered like the spirits of the forest. It had an eerie beauty, but the warmth of the place made it feel like home. Built in the traditional style of his heritage, with wooden beams, clay tiles, and vibrant colors peeking out from beneath the dense foliage, La Sombra reflected Y/N—dark yet full of life.
While La Sombra was cozy, Y/N's true home, a grand castle nearby, housed his helpers—monsters and shapeshifters formed from his own magic. They were his creations, unlike the Wisps and Grims that naturally appeared in the world. It was in that castle where Y/N's true power thrived, and it would always be there, a monument to his legacy as the Spirit of Halloween.
As Y/N and Toothiana passed through the lush greenery surrounding La Sombra, the air was rich with the scent of earth and flowers, and the sounds of the forest were a comforting hum in the background.
Once inside the hideaway, the glow of jack-o'-lanterns greeted them from the porch. The interior was scattered with artifacts from Y/N's life—a mixture of ancient Halloween memorabilia, old books, and trinkets from his travels. Despite the spooky aesthetic, there was an unmistakable sense of comfort here.
Toothiana landed softly on the floor, her wings folding behind her as she glanced around. "It's always so peaceful here," she said, a gentle smile playing on her lips.
Y/N chuckled, shrugging off his cloak and hanging it by the door. The shadows around him seemed to fade slightly, making him look less imposing and more like the man he was beneath the Spirit of Halloween. He stretched, rolling his shoulders before he walked over to where Tooth was waiting. "I guess after centuries of scaring people, it's nice to have somewhere quiet to come back to."
She tilted her head, her smile widening as she looked at him. "You say that like you don't enjoy it."
"I do," Y/N admitted, his dark eyes sparkling with amusement. "But there's a difference between a good scare and... well, terror. You know I'm not into that. It's all about the fun."
They both sat down on a small sofa in front of the fireplace, where the flickering flames cast a warm glow over them. For a moment, they were quiet, simply enjoying the tranquility after the chaos of the day.
Toothiana rested her head on his shoulder, her wings fluttering lightly as she settled beside him. "You were amazing tonight," she said softly. "The way you stood up to Pitch... you always know how to balance the shadows."
Y/N smiled, reaching up to touch the ring that hung from the necklace around his neck. "I've had plenty of practice. But having you with me helps." His fingers brushed hers, and he added, "We make a pretty good team."
Toothiana laughed gently, her fingers tracing the edge of his ring. "That's because I'm the one who keeps you from getting too carried away."
Y/N laughed, the sound deep and rich. "True." He paused, gazing into the fire as memories of his past came to the surface. "You know, I never imagined I'd end up here. Growing up in Colombia, Halloween wasn't as big as it is now. I didn't even know what I was, not at first."
Toothiana lifted her head, her curiosity piqued. "You've never really told me how it all started for you."
Y/N leaned back, his gaze distant as he recalled his early days. "I was just a kid when I started to feel... different. The shadows called to me. I could see the spirits in them, feel their presence. At first, it scared me, but then I realized I wasn't meant to fear the dark—I was part of it. I grew up in a small town near the forests, and the legends there were different. They were older, rooted in the earth and the spirits of the land. The magic of Halloween didn't come until later, but when it did, I embraced it."
He glanced at her, a small smile tugging at his lips. "It was the Man in the Moon who helped me figure it out, just like he did with Jack. I wasn't the Spirit of Halloween until he chose me."
Toothiana listened intently, her hand finding his as she squeezed gently. "And now you're one of the most important Guardians we have."
Y/N chuckled, leaning his head back against the couch. "Not sure if North or Bunny would agree with you, but thanks."
Suddenly, a burst of laughter echoed through the house, breaking the serene moment. The two turned to see their daughter, Lucía, a bundle of energy with sparkling eyes and a smile that could light up the darkest of nights. She had Y/N's black hair and a tan complexion, but her wings were striking, resembling a raven's feathers, dark and shimmering with hints of iridescent colors.
"Mami! Papi! Look what I found!" she exclaimed, holding up a small Wisp that glowed with a different hue than those that typically worked with Y/N, its light shifting in colors like a playful rainbow.
Y/N chuckled, leaning forward. "What do you have there, mi pequeña?"
Lucía grinned, her raven-like wings fluttering excitedly. "A Wisp! It was lost near the forest! Can we keep it?"
Toothiana knelt down, a soft smile on her face as she examined the tiny spirit. "Of course, sweetheart. It looks like it just wanted to help."
Lucía beamed, and Y/N felt his heart swell with pride. "And we'll call it Luz—light!"
With Luz now part of their family, Lucía bounced on her feet, her excitement infectious. "Can I take it with me to help collect teeth this week? I want to show it how fun it is!"
Y/N exchanged a knowing glance with Toothiana. Their daughter was already growing into her role, blending the magic of Halloween with the warmth of Día de los Muertos. "You can, but remember to teach it how to be gentle with the kids. No real scares—just fun ones," he reminded her.
Lucía nodded eagerly, her dark hair shimmering in the firelight. "I know, Papi! We're going to have so much fun!"
Toothiana smiled, wrapping her arm around Lucía. "You've got the spirit of Halloween and the heart of a fairy, Lucía. You'll do great."
As the night continued, the family shared stories and laughter, with Y/N and Toothiana occasionally glancing at one another, their hearts full. They knew the balance of their lives was shifting with their daughter, who represented the perfect blend of their worlds—shadows and light, Halloween and remembrance.
In the quiet of La Sombra, surrounded by the ancient magic of Halloween and the comforting spirit of Día de los Muertos, Y/N, Toothiana, and Lucía allowed themselves to revel in the love and joy they had created together. Tomorrow, they would face whatever challenges came their way. But tonight, they had each other—and that was more than enough.
