Y/n stood at the temple's entrance, arms crossed, watching the waves below as the early morning sun cast warm hues across the water. The air was still, and the faint hum of his gem filled him with a sense of calm. Though outwardly expressionless, he found a quiet beauty in moments like these. His life here on Earth, surrounded by humans and Gems alike, had given him a sense of belonging, even if he sometimes felt like an outsider.
Steven's excited voice broke through the silence, and Y/n turned to see his younger brother bounding up the stairs, Pearl and Amethyst not far behind. "Morning, Y/n!" Steven called out, waving with a wide grin.
Pearl adjusted her posture and gave Y/n an approving nod. "I'm glad you're up early, Y/n. It's a perfect day for training," she said, ever focused on his potential. Despite Y/n's stoic nature, Pearl had a fascination with him. Being an Obsidian—a Gem so rare and known as a "perfect weapon"—meant his abilities went beyond even her understanding.
Amethyst threw an arm around Y/n's shoulder. "What do you say, big guy? Gonna show us some new tricks today?" she teased.
Y/n didn't react outwardly, though he appreciated Amethyst's carefree nature. "We'll see," he replied, his tone calm and even.
They began their drills, and Y/n moved through the stances with quiet precision, copying movements with an almost eerie exactness. He had the unique Obsidian ability to mimic other Gems' powers. With a subtle touch, he lit his hand aflame like a Ruby's pyrokinetic ability, only to cool it down with a Sapphire-like cryokinesis. Pearl watched intently, pride and awe mingling in her eyes.
Connie arrived midway through the session, her parents, Priyanka and Doug, just behind her. Connie's gaze flickered with excitement when she saw Y/n, though she kept her composure in front of her parents. Priyanka raised an eyebrow, studying Y/n with that familiar, analytical look she always had. Despite her initial wariness, she'd come to respect him for his steady demeanor and devotion to Connie.
"Good morning, Y/n," Priyanka said, her tone formal. "I trust you're taking care of Connie during these...training sessions?"
Y/n nodded respectfully. "Always. She's my partner in more ways than one." Though his face showed little, his words carried a quiet promise.
Greg's van pulled up shortly after, adding to the small gathering. He greeted everyone with his usual easy-going charm, a stark contrast to the more serious energy Y/n carried. "Hey, Y/n!" Greg called out, waving. "Keeping an eye on Steven and Connie?"
"Of course," Y/n replied, glancing at Greg with a hint of warmth. Greg had always treated him like a son, and that sense of family was something Y/n held close.
The session continued, and Connie practiced alongside Y/n and Steven. At one point, she stumbled slightly, her stance faltering. Y/n was there in an instant, his arm steadying her. She looked up, cheeks flushed, her smile lighting up her face. Though he barely showed it, her presence warmed him from within, even as his Obsidian gem thrummed with a stoic rhythm.
"You're getting stronger every day, Connie," he murmured. She smiled, their fingers briefly brushing, a connection that grounded him in ways he couldn't explain.
As the day wound down, Garnet approached, her calm presence immediately noticeable. She studied Y/n with her mysterious gaze, as if sensing the weight he bore from being an Obsidian.
"You're holding back," she stated simply, her voice gentle but firm.
Y/n met her gaze. "Sometimes restraint is strength."
Garnet nodded in approval. "But remember, you don't always have to do it alone."
Their eyes met in mutual understanding, and Y/n felt the faintest sense of comfort. He didn't fully grasp his own potential, nor did he understand why the others saw something so valuable in him. But Garnet's words reminded him that even as an Obsidian, he didn't have to shoulder his responsibilities in isolation.
As the sun set and the beach grew quiet, Y/n found himself walking alongside Connie, her hand slipping into his. He looked down, meeting her gaze as she spoke softly.
"You know, you don't have to be so strong all the time," she whispered. "I'm here too, you know."
He squeezed her hand, feeling that warmth within his chest once again. "Thank you, Connie. For seeing me—really seeing me."
With her by his side, he felt a bit of the weight ease from his heart. For once, he allowed himself to truly feel, just a little, and in that moment, he was not just an Obsidian weapon but Y/n, a boy finding his place in a world that had taught him love and family.
