RED MORNINGS
2012, 9 o’ clock in the Morning
Elmo’s POV
The things we do for love… I decided not to attend my classes today and go to the library instead. I promised myself that I wouldn’t stop until I find every bit of information about Saint John. But I am also afraid to learn how Julie’s country has ended like any other kingdom during the middle ages. What if it were the Turks who finished Saint John’s reign? What if I find out that Saint John lost against the Turks? What will I do?
“Good morning Ma’am!” Elmo greeted.
“Oh, good morning Mr. Magalona!” The librarian greeted.
“Ma’am I checked all of the history books in the catalogue but none of them is what I was looking for.”
“Let me check our database. What is the title of the book that you want?” The librarian asked.
“Actually, it’s not a book. I am looking for the history of Saint John.”
“Saint John? You should try locating it in ‘040 Classification’, all biographies are in there.”
“No, Saint John is a name of a country during the middle ages.”
“Sorry. I thought looking for the life of Saint John (types on the desktop) I am sorry Elmo, we don’t have any book about Saint John. If you like, you can read all the medieval books in Class 930 0r 940 from the crusades up to the fall of the Roman Empire.”
“Okay, thank you Ma’am.” Elmo smiled.
“You’re welcome.”

1312, 9 o’ clock in the Morning
I already lost my sleepy state when I heard a lot of screams and cries from the courtyard. From my window I saw Father along with the other knights carrying a lot of people. Mistress Yvone and her guildsmen were putting bandages to our injured brothers and sisters. I immediately ran towards them.
“Father! Thomas! What happened here?” Julie shouted.
“Princess, this isn’t something fit for thee to see.” Grimhold barricaded Julie.
“No, I order you to stand back and allow me to interfere.” Julie ordered.
Grimhold bowed.
“Father! What happened?”
Father was silent and continued tending with his wounded men.
“The scouting party we assembled yesterday encountered Prince Wilhelm’s army, Princess.” Thomas explained.
“How art they?”
“Not good. But as of now, no one died. Master archer Baltus and Master rider Victoria are also in bad shape.” Thomas explained.
“Master Thomas…” a cavalry man intruded, “… we already had 8 Soldiers who just died due to blood loss.”
“I see. Call the bishop and let him give our dead siblings their last rites.”
The cavalryman bowed.
“Thomas, what are we going to do?” Julie asked.
“We have to keep our spirits intact, Princess.” Manfred joined in.
“Thy Highness! Thy Highness!” A messenger called out.
“What tidings did thee bring?” Manfred asked.
“Master Slayer Flint sent a message through Glory, his hawk.” The messenger gave a piece of parchment.
Father took the paper and opened it. His eyes grew wider and for a second he was stunned, “What does is say, Father?” Julie asked.
Father handed Thomas the paper and we both read Flint’s message, “All Turks, three days… Father, what does it mean?”
“The entire Turkish army will be here in Saint John within 3 days.” Manfred explained, “These are truly tough times” He whispered.
“Father…” Julie started to say.
“Julie, I want thee to gather all of the non-fighting women and children and lead them to the stronghold.”
“Father I want to fight!” Julie boldly exclaimed.
“NO! DO AS I SAY!” Manfred raised his voice, “Master Grimhold, assist Mistress Yvone in carrying the wounded to the infirmary. Mistress Quincy, kindly call out the other masters and mistresses of housecrafts to help my daughter carry out my orders to her. The rest prepare your selves for war. Master Thomas, take charge.”
“Yes thy highness.” Thomas genuflected.
“Father wait please hear me out.” Julie shouted.
“Julie, I do not want you to take part of this war. If you want to help me, please safe guard the incapable ones.”
“But…”
“Mistress Quincy.” Manfred signaled.
“Princess Julieanne, Let’s go.” Mistress Quincy motioned.
Julie’s POV
I don’t like this. Everything is so sudden. Prince Wilhelm is truly serious in sending out his soldiers to defeat us! I want to join Father, Thomas and the other knights in defending Saint John! Sir Elmo, where art thee? I need thy help!

“Sir Elmo…” a whisper lurked around Elmo’s thoughts.
Elmo’s POV
What was that? Oh don’t you dare scare me again old man! (Elmo looks around) I am tough you know!
This is odd. I can’t find any record about Saint John. Even history about the Turks; it never mentioned anything about Julie or her county. This isn’t right. Julie is from the past, how come that these books do not know her existence.
I continued reading all the history books in the library but to no avail Saint John’s story was never mentioned. It was already an hour past noon when I decided to take a break. I was about to leave when I accidentally saw a quotation from another book.
“History is written by the Victors.” Elmo read, “Hmmm… yeah that’s right… Sweet mother of mercy!” Elmo realized.
I hope I am wrong, but if these books only show the success and fall of the Turks and never mentioned anything about Saint John… Oh god no! What must I do? That’s it! Butch might be able to help me! Julie, please hold on!
Elmo ignored his hunger and bolted out from the library to find the guardian of time.

Somewhere in the Past
“The hour is at hand!” Francesco announced.
“To be honest old man, I can’t see any progress!” The King of Turks exclaimed.
“Time can’t be seen but you believe in it yes?”
The king went silent, “Just make sure that thy plan works. I have a very short patience.”
“Worry not. Things will be clearer than any crystal and you and your men will bask in the sun.”
“To see is to believe.”
“Believe for you to see.” Francesco answered back.
