Yoongi sat rigidly in his dorm room, shoulders tight as he stared at the screen in front of him. His father’s stern face glared through the video call, his expression twisted in anger and disbelief.
“Explain yourself, Yoongi,” his father’s voice came out low, measured, with an undercurrent of simmering fury. “How could you let this happen?”
Yoongi lowered his gaze to his hands, nervously fidgeting with his fingers as his father continued, “You’re the best. Min Yoongi—the pride of this family. And now, someone else has taken your place? A boy who got in on a scholarship? Do you have any idea how this reflects on us?”
“Dad, I—” Yoongi began, but his father’s voice only grew harsher.
“Don’t interrupt me!” His father’s tone was ice-cold. “You’ve always been the top, Yoongi. Always. And now, suddenly, you’re slipping because of some nobody?”
Yoongi swallowed hard, looking down at his hands, which trembled slightly in his lap. He could feel his heart beating painfully against his chest. He wanted to explain, to say something that would make his father understand, but the words caught in his throat.
Just then, his mother’s face appeared on the screen, standing beside his father. She placed a calming hand on his father’s shoulder, her expression softer as she looked at Yoongi. “Please, calm down,” she murmured to his father before turning to Yoongi. “Yoongi, it’s all right. I’m sure you’ll get everything back on track.”
But her soothing words only made his father scoff. “Back on track? He’s already made a mockery of himself—and us! Yoongi, I’m disappointed. I didn’t think you’d ever let something like this happen.”
Yoongi gritted his teeth, feeling the hurt of each word. He tried to keep his voice steady as he looked up at the screen, desperate to defend himself. “I tried my best. I didn’t expect—”
His father shook his head sharply, dismissing his words. “Trying isn’t enough, Yoongi. I raised you to succeed, not to lose to some… some scholarship kid.”
Yoongi’s vision blurred as he looked down again, and his hands balled into fists in frustration. He could feel his chest tightening, his breathing becoming shallow. Without another word, he reached forward and ended the call, snapping his laptop shut with a decisive click.
The silence that filled the room was deafening. Yoongi buried his head in his hands, gripping his hair as he tried to steady himself. He dug his nails into his scalp, his breath shuddering as he fought to hold back the tears that threatened to spill. Anger, frustration, and humiliation swirled within him like a storm.
This was all Hoseok’s fault. The boy who had taken everything from him—his title, his father’s pride, his own sense of self-worth.
A sharp knock on the door pulled him out of his thoughts. Yoongi stood up and walked to the door, swinging it open to reveal his two closest friends, theo and Hyun, both holding a pack of beer. Without a word, Yoongi snatched a bottle from theo’s hand, twisted the cap off, and took a long, desperate gulp. He barely registered the bitter taste as it slid down his throat, numbing him just a little.
Theo and Hyun exchanged an awkward glance, unsure how to react. Then, they walked in and closed the door behind them, watching as Yoongi downed the entire bottle in a few swift gulps. He held out his hand, motioning for more, his eyes glazed with a mix of frustration and resentment.
Hyun stepped forward, placing a comforting hand on Yoongi’s shoulder. “It’s your dad, isn’t it?”
Yoongi sighed, tilting his head back as he looked up at the ceiling. “Yeah,” he mumbled, then looked back at them. “It’s all because of some stupid newbie… some nobody who got a high rank and stole my title as class captain. Now, my dad’s disappointed in me.”
Theo whistled softly, raising an eyebrow. “Oh, we’ve heard about that. It’s all over campus. Apparently, the new student actually beat the Min Yoongi.” He smirked, nudging Yoongi.
Yoongi scoffed, rolling his eyes. The memory of that day in class when he’d been told to step down in front of everyone gnawed at him. It was humiliating.
Theo leaned in, an amused gleam in his eyes. “Well, you know, the boy is actually pretty good-looking. Maybe you should teach him a lesson. Show him who’s really in charge around here.”
Yoongi’s head snapped up at the suggestion, his interest piqued. “Huh?”
Hyun shrugged, crossing his arms as he looked at Yoongi. “Honestly, though, I don’t think you’d actually do it. You’re all bark, Yoongi. You’re not going to risk your reputation just to put some newbie in his place.”
Yoongi’s eyes narrowed, the resentment building up within him sparking into a dark resolve. “I’m not scared,” he said, his voice cold and hard. He wasn’t about to let anyone doubt him, least of all his friends.
Theo smirked, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a crumpled 20,000 won note. “All right, let’s make this interesting. I’m betting this that you won’t do anything. But if you manage to put him in his place—make him realize he’s messed with the wrong person—then this is yours.”
Yoongi raised an eyebrow, scoffing as he glanced at the money. “Deal. But I don’t need your cash. I already have more than enough.”
The two friends shrugged, still smiling as Yoongi grabbed another beer from the pack, popping it open and taking a slow, thoughtful sip. His mind was already racing, plotting. His lips twisted into a small, dark smirk as he set the bottle down.
“It’s a deal,” he murmured, voice laced with newfound determination. “And I already know exactly what I’m going to do.”
Theo and Hyun chuckled, exchanging glances as they settled onto his bed, opening their own bottles. None of them knew just how far things would go, how darkly this simple dare would unfold.
If only those two hadn’t pushed Yoongi to act, a soul might have been spared.
