After the tension of the past few days, I needed a moment to breathe, to remind myself that life wasn’t just about battles and strategy. As I walked through the garden, taking in the peace around me, I heard a soft whimper.
Frowning, I looked around and saw a small, scruffy dog crouched near the gate. It was dirty and shivering, its eyes filled with a mix of fear and hope. My heart immediately softened.
“Oh, you poor thing,” I whispered, crouching down to get a closer look. The dog looked up at me, its tail wagging slightly, as if unsure whether to trust me.
I reached out slowly, letting the dog sniff my hand before gently petting its head. It seemed to relax under my touch, leaning into my hand as though it hadn’t felt kindness in a long time. “You’re all alone, huh?” I murmured, my heart aching for the little creature.
Just then, I heard footsteps behind me. I turned to see Aayansh walking towards me, a curious look on his face.
“What’s going on here?” he asked, glancing between me and the dog.
I stood up, biting my lip as I looked at him with wide eyes. “Aayansh... can I keep this dog? Please?”
His eyebrows shot up in surprise, but before he could say anything, Harshit’s voice cut through the air from behind him. “Yeh tumhare pati kaafi nahi hai kya?” he teased, a mischievous grin spreading across his face as he walked over, his hands casually stuffed into his pockets.
Aayansh shot Harshit a glare, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the comment. The dog, sensing the playful energy, barked softly, its tail wagging a little faster now.
I looked back at Aayansh, giving him my best pleading expression. “Please, Aayansh? He needs a home. And look at him... how can you say no to this face?”
Aayansh stared at the dog for a moment, his expression softening. “I don’t know, sunshine. We’re already a full house, and you’ve got enough going on with work—”
“He can be my stress relief,” I cut in quickly, knowing I needed to make a solid case. “He’ll keep me grounded when things get tough. And you know I could use that.”
Aayansh sighed, clearly torn. Before he could respond Maa, appeared on the scene. She had clearly overheard the conversation and smiled warmly at the sight of the dog.
“Saanvi beta, if you want to keep him, I say go for it,” Aaradhya maa said, her voice full of encouragement. “We have enough love in this house for everyone, including a little dog.”
Aayansh groaned softly, clearly outnumbered. “I guess that settles it, then,” he said, looking at me with mock exasperation. “But you’re in charge of him, okay? I don’t want to hear any complaints when he chews through all your shoes.”
I grinned, throwing my arms around him. “Thank you! I promise, he’ll be the best-behaved dog ever. You won’t even notice him!”
Harshit snorted at that. “Yeah, right. Give it a week, and he’ll be running the place.”
*************
The air was cool as I walked through the Rathore garden, max trotting happily beside me. His playful barks and wagging tail were a comforting contrast to the chaos that had filled my mind recently. The peaceful morning light warmed my face, yet deep down, I knew that peace was only temporary.
My phone buzzed in my pocket, snapping me back to reality. I checked the screen, seeing a message from my brother, Anish:
"I found someone who can help us. Meet me at our usual spot in one hour. Come alone."
A frown creased my forehead as I stared at the message. Anish was usually cautious, especially when it came to bringing new people into our circle. If he trusted someone enough to think they could help us, it meant he was serious about dealing with the Deshmukh threat. And if I was honest, we needed all the help we could get.
AUTHOR'S POV
One hour later, Saanvi sat in the corner booth of a quiet café, waiting for Anish and the mysterious “help” he’d mentioned. She sipped her coffee slowly, her mind racing with questions about who this person could be.
The café door opened, and Anish walked in, nodding to her before gesturing to the man following him. The stranger was tall, with sharp features and a calm, assessing gaze. He looked as though he’d seen his share of battles, yet there was something about him that radiated control.
“Saanvi, meet Vikram,” Anish said as they approached her table. “He’s... let’s just say he knows Deshmukh’s world better than anyone else.”
I extended my hand slowly, observing him closely as he shook it. “Nice to meet you, Vikram. Anish didn’t give me many details.”
Vikram’s eyes met mine, and I saw a flicker of understanding there—a silent acknowledgment of the burdens we shared. “I keep a low profile,” he said, his voice steady. “But Anish told me what you’re dealing with. I know Deshmukh’s operations, and I know how he operates. If you’re serious about taking him down, I can help you.”
SAANVI'S POV
I studied Vikram carefully, trying to read the intent behind those calculating eyes. He didn’t have the smooth-talking charm or arrogance that Deshmukh’s men usually carried. There was something else—an edge, a sense of restraint. He was calm, steady. He reminded me, in some ways, of Aayansh.
I cleared my throat, pushing aside my unease. “Vikram, before we go any further, I need to know something.” I leaned forward, meeting his gaze directly. “Why help us?”
A slight smile crossed his face, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “Deshmukh and I have a history,” he said, his voice even. “Let’s just say he’s stepped over the line one too many times, and I’d like to see him lose his empire. When Anish told me you’re ready to take him down, I saw an opportunity to settle a few scores of my own.”
I exchanged a look with Anish, who gave me a small nod. He trusted Vikram. That was enough for now.
But should I tell Aayansh now!?
AUTHOR'S POV
Vikram laid out his plan in quiet, precise terms. He knew exactly how Deshmukh’s network operated, from his supply routes to his most loyal allies. He explained that Deshmukh’s greatest strength was his ability to instill fear. “Break that,” Vikram said, his tone unflinching, “and he’s just another man scrambling to hold onto his power.”
Saanvi felt a surge of hope and determination. This was what she had been waiting for—someone who knew Deshmukh’s weaknesses and had the skills to exploit them.
“We’ll need to move quickly,” Saanvi said, glancing at both Vikram and Anish. “The longer Deshmukh thinks he has the upper hand, the more power he gains.”
Vikram nodded. “I can start by taking out his supply routes, cutting off his cash flow. Without that, his men will lose faith in him. But you’ll need to be ready—he’ll retaliate hard and fast.”
Saanvi took a steadying breath, meeting his gaze. “I’ve been ready for this my entire life.”
