It was almost a month of waiting, and after so many tests, Alicia and Risa were finally in the operating room for the sperm transfer to their egg cells so they could have a baby. It was still a double embryo transfer operation.
“Are you ready, Mayor Alice?” Doc Katie asked as Alicia lay down on a hospital bed, while Risa was right beside her, holding her hand.
“Kinakabahan po,” she replied with a nervous smile.
“Still the same, Mayor. It’s going to hurt, but just bear with it, okay? And you have Risa here, so you can crash her hand,” she joked.
“Crash talaga,” Alicia rolled her eyes playfully. Since Katie was her cousin, this kind of teasing was common between them. She then turned to Alicia. “You can do this, Love. This is for us, for our happiness, to complete our family.” Alicia nodded and calmed herself.
“Mas masakit pa siguro yung 4 fingers kesa dito, feeling ko kaya ko naman,” Alicia joked, making Risa laugh. The nurses and even Doc Katie joined in the laughter. “Oy, joke lang,” she felt embarrassed since the joke was supposed to be only for Risa, not knowing others were listening.
“It’s okay, Mayor Alice. They’re not kids, so they understand; maybe they were just caught off guard,” Doc Katie reassured her, and Alicia didn’t respond to avoid more embarrassment.
“It’s time, Doc Katie,” the nurse said. Katie nodded and checked Alicia’s condition to ensure everything was safe before beginning the procedure. The pain slowly spread through her body as the operation progressed, and Alicia bit her lip, holding Risa’s hand tightly for strength. Risa closed her eyes due to the painful grip Alicia had on her hand.
“Awhhh!” Alicia couldn’t hold it in anymore and shouted when the second substance was administered. “Ahhhh sakit,” she cried as tears began to fall from the pain she felt.
“Love?” Risa called, her concern evident. From Alicia’s reaction, Risa could tell she was in agony, so she let Alicia grab and hug her arm.
“Love, ang sakit,” she cried, seeking comfort from Risa, though she knew Risa couldn’t really help. So, she hugged Risa’s arm tightly.
“Just hang in there, Love. It’s almost over,” Risa whispered, feeling immense sympathy and heartache as she watched Alicia suffer.
After almost an hour in the operating room, it was finally over. Alicia’s legs were trembling from the operation, and she felt weak. They checked her, and everything was fine; such pain was normal during and after the procedure. In the operating room, Alicia closed her eyes to rest and soon fell asleep.

Alicia woke up with her lower abdomen in pain. She held it as she slowly sat up on her hospital bed. She saw Risa asleep on the couch a short distance away and tried her best to call out despite her sore throat.
