Virat paced the hospital corridor, the sterile white walls doing nothing to calm his nerves. Every minute felt like an eternity. He could hear Anushka’s cries of pain from inside the labor room, each one piercing his heart.
He clenched his fists, his throat dry, and his mind racing. He wished he could take her pain away, wished there was something -- anything -- he could do.
Ved sat quietly in the waiting area, his small hands clasped in Nisha's, sensing the gravity of the situation but not fully understanding it. Nisha kept him distracted with soft words and gentle pats, but Ved’s eyes kept darting toward the door, searching for his parents.
Inside the labor room, Virat was by Anushka’s side, gently wiping the tears that streamed down her face. She was gripping his hand tightly, her knuckles white.
“I’m here, bub. I’m right here,” he whispered, kissing her forehead. His voice was steady, but inside, he was breaking. Seeing her like this -- so vulnerable and in pain--was unbearable.
Moments later, her parents arrived, rushing through the hospital doors. Asha entered the room immediately, her face filled with concern. “What happened, beta?” she asked, her voice soft but urgent.
Virat, still holding Anushka’s hand, quickly explained the situation. His words were rushed, almost frantic. “She’s in so much pain, and the due date… it’s still a week away. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t even—” His voice cracked, and his panic was evident.
Asha placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “Shhh, Virat. It’s okay. Sometimes these things happen. Don’t worry. She’ll be fine. The doctors know what they’re doing.” Her voice was calm and reassuring, a stark contrast to the turmoil he felt inside.
“But what if something goes wrong? I’m not prepared!” Virat’s voice trembled. His eyes darted around the room, looking for answers that weren’t there.
“Virat,” Asha said firmly, taking his hand in her hands, “you need to calm down. Anushka needs you to be strong right now.”
Ajay, standing at the doorway, gently led Virat outside. “Beta, panicking won’t help anyone. Anushka needs you to be her rock, not another source of stress,” he said, guiding Virat to a chair.
Virat sat down, his head in his hands, breathing heavily. “But, Baba… the pain she’s in… I can’t take it. I feel so helpless.”
Ajay placed a hand on his shoulder. “I know it’s hard. But this is what she needs from you now. Strength. Support. You can do this, Virat.”
Virat nodded slowly, his breathing beginning to steady. He looked up at Ajay, eyes filled with determination. “I need to go back in.”
Ajay gave him a reassuring nod. “Go. Be with her.”
As Virat walked back toward the labor room, a nurse stopped him. “Only one person can be inside,” she reminded him.
Asha stepped out, giving Virat a reassuring squeeze on his arm. “Go, beta. She needs you more.”
Virat was handed a blue gown and cap. He put them on quickly, his hands shaking slightly but his resolve firm. Entering the room, he moved to Anushka’s side, gently taking her hand again.
“I’m here, Anu,” he whispered, leaning close. “We’re in this together. Just breathe. You’ve got this.”
The room was charged with a mix of tension and urgency. The bright lights cast harsh shadows on the walls, reflecting the gravity of the moment.
