As the Senior Staff of the Justice League has been dispatched to fight off an army of some weird-but-extremely-hostile-and-unable-to-be-reasoned-with subterranean creatures, even though my husband asked me to be a part of this battle, my mind is somewhere else.
"Lois," says Clark, punching away a rock monster, "your head's not in the game. What's going on?"
"I'm just thinking about yesterday," I tell him.
"Ra's al Ghul?" he asks.
"Yeah," I reply. "I just can't get over what went down at Jon and Elli's party."
"What," he says, "Ra's just showing up and basically crashing the party?"
"Yeah," I answer him. "Like no matter how much we didn't want him there, he was still going to do what he went there to do."
"Well, baby, he knows who we are, and he also knew that not only would we not risk our secret identities for a firefight with him in front of civilians while we were out of uniform, but that we also wouldn't risk the lives and physical well-being of every normal person who was at that party, either. Besides, Lois, it wasn't our place to do anything but our best to protect our children the best we could, given the circumstances. Don't let it get to you, too much."
I punch another rock monster away and continue, "And the nerve of that rapist to show up, in Bruce and Selina's face, all dolled up like nothing ever happened between her and Bruce, nearly two-and-a-half decades ago is just infuriating!"
"Y'know, I betcha more than anything that it took Selina everything she had not to try and claw Talia's eyes out 'er head..."
"It took me everything I had not to incinerate her where she stood..."
"Lois, dear: That's murder."
"I know..." I grit out between my teeth.
"Computer, mute comms for Superman and Ultrawoman. What I can't believe is Damien's brass balls," says Clark. "He could've at least tried to act like... like..."
He sighs and I finish my husband's thought for him, "Like he didn't like Elli?"
"That would've been preferable..."
"Clark, Elli has blossomed into a strong, confident, gorgeous young woman, in the same way that Jon has grown into an equally as strong, confident, and handsome young man. I can't fault Damien for seeing Elli that way. They're both straight and she's legally grown, now. And even though I'm not too thrilled about their age difference, either, let's face facts, Clark: A six-year age gap between Elli and Damien is better than ten."
"Not by much."
"But it is better. And now that Jon and Elli are eighteen, there's not much that we can do about trying to keep Elli and Damien apart. And even if there was, if we tried to do thusly, we would only succeed in initiating an entire avalanche of problems between ourselves and the twins, ourselves and Aurora, ourselves and Damien, ourselves and Bruce and Selina, and between ourselves and everyone else in general. Not the most optimal outcome. So, to avoid all those potential problems, I say let 'em alone. If Elli is happy with him, then we'll be happy for them and support them both. But if she's not, then we will support her in however she wishes to proceed as a result of that outcome. Either way, we will support whatever decision she makes as it pertains to herself and Damien. By her own admission, she's wanted him for sixteen years. Now she's got him. It's now our responsibility to guide her--not influence her, but gently guide her--in her choices from here on out."
