Bucky's neck was aching by the time work finished for the day. Somehow a day hunched over paperwork left him more drained than a day training. The lift's ping sent a shock to his ever growing migraine. All he wanted was to lie in his dark room and never leave. With his almost wife of course. The one that's been comforting him since Romania.

The dark smudge on the door should have alerted him to trouble first; he was so tired he didn't notice anything amiss. Until the door would close behind him. The frame was splintered and the chain snapped too.

"Y/N?" He didn't want to turn around and see what else was damaged. But he had too lest his heart burst.

Bucky walked through the flat, checking each hiding place Y/N would fit, but he couldn't quite bring himself to fix the trinkets knocked onto the floor. As he circled back to the kitchen – with his gaze low enough that he missed the scratched walls – his headache was feeling more like his skull was caving in.

Stopping at the kitchen table; seeing the still dripping blood on the corner, he couldn't stop the rising bile and rushed to the bathroom.

Feeling his shoes sticking with each step back nearly had him retching again. Then something crinkled. There was a piece of paper stuck to his shoe. He could have sworn he felt his metal arm go numb.

When Steve answered his phone he didn't recognise Bucky's voice. Through the panicked sobs and crashing of furniture he had no idea what was happening. He drove to Bucky's flat, nearly causing a few crashes, and kicked the door down. Or would have if it could still be closed properly.

There sat Bucky, near but facing away from the substantial puddle of blood in the kitchen. A sheet of paper was clutched in his hand.

"They got her, Steve," He sniffed, "They've taken Y/N."

Steve didn't need to ask who.

The not so white note lay in the center of the table. Come and find her.

Almost every Avenger gathered in the conference room. Steve briefed the team on the next location they had yet to search. He droned on the same way he had for the last week. Bucky didn't have a clue what he said, nor did he care anymore. He just wanted to find her.

If it hadn't been for his friends, he would have slept in the quinjet, waiting for the next mission. He could think of anything else. They all said she wouldn't want him to neglect his health like this. But she wouldn't want to be kidnapped and used as bait either.

When the next possible location was discovered, he was waiting on the helipad before Tony had rolled out of bed.

Bucky didn't even wait for the jet to land before he was jumping out. He landed on the roof of the building hidden in a forest. The wind nipped at any exposed flesh, and even as he entered the shelter, the cold was still biting.

The bare halls of the HYDRA base brought a sickening familiarity, despite not recalling that location. He didn't need to: every facility was built the same. Without the urgency, he might have noted the lack of staff. When he was dragged between laboratories, the corridors were never without some kind of life.

Every bulb flickered out, replaced with the lower flashing emergency light. Then, an almighty crash as the rest of the team broke through the remaining defences.

Bucky peered through every door with a window, and kicked through those that didn't. Until finally he broke into a pitch black cell. The dim light flooded in after him, highlighting the furthest corner containing the shivering body. Y/N

Blood stained the side of her swollen face. Sweat trickled down her brow, dragging red stains with it. She was still wearing the last clothes he had seen her in, over a week ago. In the two years they had been together, Bucky had never seen her in such a pitiful state. He would have broken down in tears if he wasn't so determined to get her home.

As soon as he swooped her up, she was twisting over his arm to vomit away from him.

Bucky strode through the corridors, barely able to see under the flashing lights but barely needing them. A man with the face of a rat and the height of a child stood in his path wearing a white lab coat. He held a red notebook.

Y/N had tucked her face into the crook of his neck, too nauseous to face the lights or moving scenery. With her clinging onto his shoulders and holding her up with his right hand, his left was free. One swift punch to the nose had the man's glasses shattering and blood spewing before he got a second word out.

In that moment, with everything to lose, nothing was going to stop him from leaving the facility.

Bucky washed the dirt off Y/N's back as she sat in a hot bath. They were back in their shared room in the Avengers tower, where they stayed while apartment hunting after leaving Romania. Her head had been stitched up and a pack of antibiotics sat on the bedside table. She had been advised to stay in the med bay, but couldn't bear to be anywhere so sterile and uncomfortable. And the beds were too small for Bucky to cling onto her all night.

He wrapped her up in the fluffiest towel while he searched for the spare pajamas she left behind. The bed sheets were the softest he could find too, just wanting her to rest comfortably.

"Here we go, all toasty."

"Can we just..." Y/N tucked her aching legs underneath the blanket and groaned, "Sleep for the next month?"

"Sure, Doll." He crawled in next to her. "I'm not going to let you go ever again." His arms caged her against him.

"Good."
