The preparations for the singing concert went along more smoothly than Claire had expected, which was a relief. Leanne and Cailyn chose Flashlight (by Jessie J/ Pitch Perfect 2) as their song, and now, at Caitlin's insistence, they were going to sing Black Magic by Little Mix just for fun.
It had been two weeks since Claire's party, and last weekend everyone had gone to Claire's house once more for a song rehearsal, which wasn't that hard, but the concert wasn't until the end of term, so they had plenty of time. Caitlin hadn't turned up for the first rehearsal, claiming that she had caught a cold. When they'd seen her after the lunchtime when she mysteriously ran away from Leanne in the library and disappeared, she'd been extra skittish and nervous when around them. When Leanne didn't interrogate her or do anything, she had calmed down and by now she was more or less back to normal.
Now they all had met up again at Leanne's house for the second rehearsals.
"Sing with us, Caitlin," said Leanne, giving Caitlin her microphone. Or rather, she pressed it into Caitlin's hands than letting her take it herself.
Helina was sitting cross-legged on the floor reading a book. She was still listening to their singing although she seemed more absorbed in her book.
Caitlin gave up. "Fine."
The song started, and Caitlin began to sing. She was soon joined by Leanne, and then Cailyn, after Leanne gave her a look. Halfway through the song Helina's phone started vibrating so hard that Claire could hear it hitting the table as it vibrated.
Helina quickly grabbed her phone and checked the screen, which was flashing brightly. I'll come right back, she mouthed to Claire, and hurried out of the room, answering her phone as she went.
Claire secretly recorded Leanne, Caitlin and Cailyn singing the song, and when they were done she showed it to them. Leanne hit her, Caitlin yelled at her and Cailyn groaned.
"What? It's good," Claire protested.
"I sound horrible, if you haven't noticed already," said Caitlin. "I only started my singing lessons last week, you know."
"Leanne's a natural singer," Cailyn piped up. "She sounds really good even on video."
"I - WHAT?" said Leanne. She grabbed Claire's phone and listened to the video again. "No I don't!"
"You do," said Caitlin. "Get over it."
Leanne hit her with a cushion in response, and soon they were both having a cushion fight. Cailyn picked up a pillow and was about to join in when she turned and tapped Claire on the shoulder.
"Yeah?"
"Where's Helina?"
"She had a phone call," Claire replied. "She went off out there to answer it."
"Thanks," said Cailyn, walking quietly in the direction Claire had pointed to.
"You're not going to eavesdrop on her, are you?" Claire asked, alarmed.
Cailyn grinned. "That's exactly what I'm going to do."
"But it could be personal!" yelled Claire. She got up and tried to grab Cailyn's arm, but Cailyn had already opened the door and slipped through. Claire shook her head. She felt lucky that Leanne and Caitlin respected her privacy enough not to eavesdrop.
Two minutes later, Cailyn ran inside the room and sat next to Claire. She hurriedly took out her phone and randomly started texting someone like she'd been doing it for the whole time. A few seconds later Helina came back in.
