At first, I had fallen in love with law because of the justice, and the possibilities.

To me, there was nothing like a second chance. For those who deserved it, those who didn't, and those who'd had far too many. I liked analyzing the different walks of life through each case and each client. How there was a story to tell, no matter the protagonist or antagonist.

There was a reason, for anything.

Over time, I've learned not to get too personally involved, for it was bad for my judgment. But while doing that I also learned to keep my empathy. Knowing when to use it, and when it was a weakness.

Since the start of my career, the goal was just to enjoy every step. From the loads of books and hard classes, to passing the bar, to doing my best as an apprentice, then my best on my very first solo case. Then, it was to maintain a winning streak, and be okay with the losses if they did happen.

It was to be better than myself... To outdo myself, every chance that I got.

Now, I've been an attorney for a little less than five years. And, again, things are already beginning to change...

Clicking off the latest email I'd received from the DA with a sigh, I stood from the desk in our home office. And being that it was an early Friday morning, I was now on the way to wake the kids for school.

Winter break had ended just last week, and now that we were officially fostering the twins, we could have them enrolled and take them to their doctors and dentists appointments. Like their actual parents, even though we'd taken up that role months ago.

In the kitchen and already cooking breakfast was my fiancé, in her own world before she flashed a grin my way upon seeing me.

"We'll be down in a second baby."

"Okay," Noah called as I was heading upstairs.

Passing our bedroom, I gave their door a gentle knock before pushing the handle. And sound asleep they were, looking adorable as last night's cartoon played on the TV still, at a soft volume.

In a corner of the room was Gianni's train set, the train parked at its station for now as he'd fully set it up before New Year's even arrived. Above his head on the top bunk, also, his lego airplane hung from the ceiling, surrounded by balls of planets of the solar system.

Every time I saw them now it only reminded me of how much of a pain in the ass it was to get it up there.

But, of course, the wide smile on his face once he saw it, that had made it all worth it...

"Wake upp my lovess," I sang softly when flicking on the main light. And upon them groaning while stretching, I chuckled a little. "I thought you two were excited for school."
