Rose narrowed her emerald green eyes, staring into the fog. Bard walked across the barge and stood in front of the dwarves. "The money, quick, give it to me." Thorin shook his head. "We'll pay you when we get our provisions, but not before." The man glared at Thorin. "If you value your freedom, you'll do as I say. There are guards ahead." Bard said frantically. "Look." Rose pointed out into the distance. A wooden house was in sight, and as they got closer, they could see the town. Bard pointed at the barrels. "All of you, get in the barrels," He quickly glanced at Rose. "Just do not say anything suspicious." Rose nodded as the boat stopped at a dock. Bard gave her a small look, and then jumped onto the dock and began to speak with a man. Rose watched as Bard told the man something and shook his hand. Bard nodded at Rose; he then grabbed crates of fish and began to pour the fish into the barrels which contained the dwarves. Murmurs of disgust were coming from the barrels, and Rose heard Dwalin groan. "Oh god." Bard kicked the barrel to quiet him. "Quiet! We're approaching the toll gate." He exchanged looks with Rose as a man walked out of his booth. "Halt! Goods inspection. Papers, please. Oh, it's you, Bard." Bard pulled the barge over to the man who had just walked out his booth to meet Bard. Rose watched and leaned against one of the barrels, listening closely to the gatekeeper and Board's conversation. "Morning, Percy." "Anything to declare?" The gatekeeper asked. Bard slowly shook his head, smiling. "Nothing, but that I am cold and tired, and ready for home." He handed the gatekeeper some papers. "You and me both." Percy said kindly, and checked the papers. He lifted his head and made eye contact with Rose. "Ah, you must have met one of the Mirkwood guards." Bard nodded. "Aye, she is a friend of mine. Very nice. And very skilled." He added. Rose blushed at his complement, and shook the gatekeeper's hand. "Nice to meet you." Rose said kindly and gave him a shy smile. Percy nodded at Rose and walked into his office to stamp the papers. "How do you know I am skilled?" Rose leaned close to Bard. He shrugged. "Well, with all of those arrow wounds and the way you yanked out the arrow from your leg, you must have a lot of experience with war." Rose smiled a bit, and watched Percy come out of his office, holding Bard's papers. "Here we are. All in order." Rose smiled as Bard reached for them, but a hand snatched the papers out of Percy's hand. A sickening voice came from the shadows. "Not so fast."

A disgusting-looking man with a unibrow had appeared from the shadows and took the papers from the gatekeeper. He read the papers and then looked at the barrels. "Consignment of empty barrels from the Woodland Realm. Only, they're not empty, are they, Bard?" The unsightly man threw away the papers and approached Rose and Bard, a couple of guards behind him. The man stared at Rose, and gave her a grim smile. "Oh, I see you have a lady friend." He slurred, grabbing at Rose's hand and kissing her knuckles. Rose felt her stomach turn, and she quickly pulled away from him right when his lips pulled away from her hand. The gross man snickered, then turned to Bard. Rose wiped her hands on her tunic and glared at the man. "If I recall correctly, you're licensed as a bargeman," He said, then he grabbed a fish from one of the barrels and held it up to Bard. "Not a fisherman." He snarled. "That's none of your business." Said Bard. The man with the unibrow raised a finger. "Wrong. It's the Master's business, which makes it my business." Bard shook his head sadly. "Oh come on, Alfrid, have a heart. People need to eat!" "These fish are illegal." Alfrid threw the fish he was holding in the water. He then turned to the guards. "Empty the barrels over the side." He ordered. The men nodded and walked onto the barge, grabbing the barrels. They then began to tip the barrels over, and the fish began to fall into the icy water. Bard stepped forward a bit and glared at Alfrid. "Folk in this town are struggling. Times are hard. Food is scarce." Alfrid rolled his eyes. "Not my problem." "And when the people hear the Master is dumping fish back in the lake, when the rioting starts, will it be your problem then?" Bard said. The men glared at eachother for a moment, leaving Rose awkwardly staring at the two. Alfrid narrowed his eyes and held up his hand. "Stop." He ordered the guards.
