The people of Laketown frantically began to pack their things into boats. The dragon Smaug has awoken, and is flying towards Laketown in fury and anger. Rose stormed back into the house. "We have no time; we must leave." Rose said, grabbing her things. Rose slung her bow over her shoulder and adjusted her daggers. She looked towards Kili. "Come, get Kili up." "Come on, brother." Fili said kindly, helping his brother to his feet. "Come on, come on! Let's go." Bofur said quickly. Kili pushed his brother's arms away. "I'm fine. I can walk." "As fast as you can." Said Tauriel. Rose grabbed Bain by his shoulders. "Come on," Rose said, and took hold Tilda's hand. "We must go before Smaug gets to us." Bain looked out the window desperately. "We're not leaving. Not without our father." he said.
"If you stay here, your sisters will die. Is that what your father would want?" Tauriel said. Rose tightened the strap of her belt. "Tauriel. I will go get Bard. He could be in possible danger." Tauriel glared at Rose. "How? Smaug will burn you to ashes. Come on, before we are all burned to death!" Rose glided down to the back to Bard's house, and she leaped onto a boat. "All of you, get on." Rose helped Tilda and Sigrid onto the boat. Tauriel handed Rose an oar. Rose got up and pushed her foot onto the dock, and the boat glided through the canal. Rose helped steer the boat, and watched as the surrounding houses were engulfed in flames. Rose listened in pain as she heard the screaming of innocent people, and she heard the mighty roars of Smaug. A woman, who Rose saw, was weeping, next to a large pillar. A puddle of blood was seeping from under the pillar, so a man must have been crushed. She kept rowing, and Tilda hugged Rose. "Will we make it?" She asked. Rose looked down, and patted the girl's head. "Of course. I will not let anything happen to you."
Chunks of wood and houses plunged into the icy water. "Look out!" Bain said, and Rose turned, only to see a larger boat filled with gold collide with theirs. Rose sighed in frustration, but she managed to push the boat away from the larger one. Rose watched as the gold fell into the water. "Move it! Move it! Come on, faster!" She heard the Master of Laketown say. "My gold, my GOLD!" The boat drifted away from the Master's boat. Rose turned to Tauriel. "We must hide." Rose steered the boat and hid the boat under an overhang. She kept watch, and Tauriel let the boat drift off once she realized it was safe. "Da!" Rose heard Bain yell. Rose looked up to where Bain was looking. She noticed Bard on top of the bell tower. Rose gasped, and watched Bard notch an arrow and shoot it at Smaug. "He hit it! He hit the dragon!" Kili said in shock, pointing up at the sky. "No..." Tauriel sighed. "He did! He hit his mark, I saw!" Rose shook her head. "His arrows cannot pierce its hide; I fear nothing will." The boat began to drift, under a hanging hook. Rose felt the boat shake, and saw Bain jump at the hook. Rose widened her eyes and reached to grab the young boy, but she missed. "Bain!" She yelled. "What are you doing?" Bofur yelled. "Come back! Bain, come back!" Fili yelled as well. Rose gazed as Bain swung onto the dock, then running towards a boat. "Leave him!" Tauriel said. "We cannot go back." "Bain!" Tilda yelled after her brother. After a while of rowing, Rose turned around, making eye contact with Tauriel. Rose's gaze trailed off to the right of Tauriel's head, and she gasped. Smaug's now dead body was falling to the ground. "Brace yourselves!" Rose yelled, covering Tilda and Sigrid. A loud splash of water rang Rose's ears, and a large wave went the small boat rocking back and forth wildly. Ice-cold water splashed into the boat, and a few shards of wood landed in the boat as well. Rose gasped, shaking the water out of her hair. She was drenched. "Is everyone alright?" she said. Everyone nodded. Rose gazed at the corpse of Smaug's body. "The dragon is dead." She turned to Tilda and Sigrid. "Your father killed Smaug."
The sun began to rise, and the boat which contained Fili, Kili, Bofur, Oin, Tilda, Sigrid, Tauriel, and Rose herself began to drift toward shore. Crowds of refugees and injured were all huddled to shore. Some people were screaming and crying over the loss of their loved ones. Rose jumped off of the boat and waded toward shore. She heard a man screaming, and saw someone frantically splashing towards the beach. "Will somebody help me? HELP!" Rose shuddered once she recognized the terrible voice of Alfrid Lickspittle. He clambered over someone, and he kept yelling and splashing. "HELP!" Rose turned around and made her way back to the boat and helped Kili get onto shore. Rose held Tilda's hand as Rose walked through the crowd. Rose looked for any sight of Bard.
