By the time they finally took off the next day, Kalayavan was fuming because he'd been outvoted. Outvoted by a landslide, as he was the only one who disagreed with Caterina's suggestion. Out of his own jealousy no less, he tightened his grip on the steering wheel when he thought about her just saying his name.

At that morning meeting, she had said something about knowing someone who might be able to help them get across the border. A fireball ignites in the pit of his stomach before it had even left her lips, because there weren't many powerful bodies that she knew. And most of the ones she did were either dead, or of Relevent decent.

And the mortal police captain.

When she'd offered Daniel's name, Kal didn't like the way it sounded on her tongue. Her speaking the name of a man who had a clear fascination with her made his blood boil. He couldn't imagine the rage he would be feeling when she was actually standing in front of him again. He'd belted his disapproval, only for her to insist he would help, sounding slightly questionable in the process. Recalling that whatever they'd discussed had sent him peeling out of her driveway in a fury. He'd always meant to find out, but more pressing matters had arisen and it had slipped his mind.

Which was why she waited to tell him the gist of it until the two of them were on their way to his house with two other Relevents following behind them in a separate stolen vehicle. If she hadn't, they would have stayed with the rest of the mass back in the meadow they'd chosen for the night, moving to meet up at an abandoned warehouse just North of the border.

She was lucky that the logic she'd used had kept him moving on, after whipping a bitch in the middle of the dirt road. Until there was another option, this was the only way to help his people. He wasn't going to let his own feelings be the reason they're cornered and slaughtered.

"Take a left at the light," Caterina pointed through the windshield at the only light in the small town on Northern Spades where he'd first found his pet.

He was mildly surprised when she hadn't mentioned returning to her farm once, even though they were only a few miles away. Had she given up on the place? Recalling she hadn't asked about her rings or portfolio since they'd been together again. Maybe she was just distracted enough for now? Would she still want to return one day? Or had she let that thought go along with the ghost from her past that had still haunted her?

"Up ahead on the right," her nervous tone stopped his silent questioning and pulled him back to the issue at hand, "The green house."

Kalayavan risked a glance over at her, watching her hands ring together nervously as he pulled to a stop in front of the plain homestead. He had never asked her why the real police officer had peeled out of her driveway that day he had come to collect her. Not allowing his mind to come up with ideas of what might have transpired between them, not when it made her this nervous after everything she'd recently been through.

Clearing her throat, she didn't turn her head back in order to face him, speaking her ridiculous next words to her closed window. "Maybe it would be best if I went to talk to him alone." She knew him too well, but that hadn't stopped her from trying to put her opinion out there anyway.

He saw her eyes close in the reflection of the glass, preparing for the argument she knew was coming. "Over my dead body," but he knew all the knowledge on her to boot, cutting off any retort she might have thought to form. "Lidel gerl, you are already testing my patience by bringing us here, so do not try to push me any further. Vergille and Samial will stay by the vehicles, but I am not letting you farther from me than absolutely necessary." A throat he'd promised her the night before, without so much as a crack in his seriousness. Because he'd meant it, even going as far as following her to the bathroom and waiting outside. The woman wouldn't be going anywhere without him anytime soon.
