'Bring me the package and you shall know true freedom'
Dark brown eyes scanned over the noe for the millionth time, as if re-reading it would make the mission any easier. Especially now that she had given birth, and it wasn't simply one package but two. Taking the pregnant mother would have been easier, and his first choice; but a true hunter could get to any prey, so he would improvise.
Using the tools at his disposal, he looked back down the slope to watch as Cat climbed out of the truck, turning back to grab a carseat out behind her. The way she cradled the thing to her chest caused a ping in his own, maybe it was jealousy; whatever it was, he shoved it down. Avoiding the urge to put the infant into the crosshairs of his sniper scope, just like he had to their father. Not only was the child not at fault, but if the kids died, so did his chance at a real life.
So instead, he turned the weapon to watch the car come to a stop next to them, unloading in turn.
Only the onlooker faltered when he saw a familiar build climbing out from the backseat, making him pull away from the scope for a moment. Blinking a couple of times, he put his eye back to the lens to see it was in fact the same man from her past; from their past. The police captain tried to take the weighted carrier from Cat, only to back off when the Sepireer came around the front of the truck protectively.
Even though he raised his hands to show he was no threat, Daniel didn't back more than a few feet away. As if he expected she was in danger with the Relevent who would kill anyone to come between them. An phantom ache in his side was proof of that; it was the closest he'd ever come to dying a real death and it was the closest he planned to be, ever again.
A ridiculous notion on the captain's part that was pointless, not that the cop would remember that. Like many things, it was wiped from his mind; just like Cat, keeping them ignorant test subjects. But that was the kind of man Dan had always been, even before the new memories. Providing a barrier for Caterina like he had a primal urge to protect her. Almost like he was her Relevent Pretekter, instead of just being another fellow lab rat.
It had bugged the onlooker back when he had his role to play, just how much the man seemed attached to Cat. If he was being honest with himself, he could feel the familiar irritation, only this time it was on behalf of the trained killer who had to deal with it now.
Turning the gun back, he actually found the eldest of the small group of Relevents looking around in his general direction; as if he could sense the threat laying there. With quick reflexes, he reached a hand forward to cover the front lens of the scope to hide the reflexive surface. Laying the rifle down on its side, he rolled to his back, effectively hiding himself from sight. Not righting himself until after he counted to one hundred, keeping his other senses heightened in case there was an in seen approach. Once he was centered again, he found them standing outside the front office.
When he put his eye back to the scope, he found that Dan was no longer with the group. They were standing together in an enclosed group talking in hushed voices, only for a few minutes before Jefferys reappeared from within the building. He said something before willingly handing something to the two killers, whose names he didn't know. Then he turned to Cat and handed her something as well, before adding something to make her Pretekter bristle. He swore loud enough that the onlooker could hear him from where he was perched.
Whatever it was, it had made the police captain happy, motioning to the female and infants as he added something; the conversation seemed to come to an end. Only because Kalayavan put himself between the two and motioned for Cat to move away, toward the room the two of them would be sharing. It wasn't until Dan walked in behind them that he pieced it together.
He now understood why the Relevent had gotten worked up, the human was putting himself between a Pretekter and Kanfedant. The boy was lucky the assassin hadn't killed him the moment he spoke the words, let alone allowing him to actually enter the room.
Laying the weapon on its side again, the hunter sighed heavily. Soon he would face them and he wasn't sure if either of them would remember him. Plus there was always the chance he would have to fight the Sepireer, if he felt slighted by not having killed him.
But that was future him's problem, for now he would hunker down and watch to figure out if the plans change again. If not, they'll be driving into the trap he had laid hours earlier. Almost going to waste as Cat laid dying in that building, because her animal wasn't going to do anything when she died, nothing but fly into a murderous rage. Now that everything was back on track, he just had to watch, and wait.
The night was almost completely uneventful, until shift change, or the two love birds made an appearance for what they must have thought was a private walk. One in which Cat looked upset, which settled a heavy stone in his stomach, forcing him to look away from the two.
Packing up his things, he decided to move on and wait for them at the rendezvous point. Knowing very well he would need a couple hours head start so he could get some rest. Especially if he was to pull this off without slipping up.
*I wouldn't call this a chapter, more of an insight. Sorry.*
